Worry Had Become the Most Spiritual Thing I Did

I want to describe something I did for years and did not have a name for.

I would lie in bed and go through the money. Not planning. There was no plan involved. I would just move the same numbers around in the dark, over and over, checking them the way you check a lock you already locked. And when I finally fell asleep I felt like I had done something.

That was the part I could not see. It felt productive. It felt like the responsible half of my brain doing its job while the rest of me rested. And underneath it there was a quiet belief that if I stopped doing that, something would go wrong, because the worrying was somehow holding it together.

Nobody teaches that out loud. It gets absorbed. And in a house where money is tight, the person who worries most is often the person everybody trusts most, so the worry gets rewarded and it grows a halo.

And then Jesus goes after it in the most famous sermon ever preached, and He does not do it the way I expected.

He does not tell anybody to stop caring. He says: your Father knows you need these things.

He never says the need is not real

Read what He actually says, because the tone of it is not what most people carry away.

For after all these things do the Gentiles seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. (Matthew 6:32-33, King James Version)

Your heavenly Father knows that ye have need of all these things.

He does not say the needs are small. He does not say a spiritual person should not care about food and clothes. He calls them needs, which is what they are, and He says the Father is already aware.

That is the part that undid me. The correction is not aimed at caring. It is aimed at the ranking. He is not saying stop needing. He is saying stop leading with it.

You are not carnal for needing things, and He has never once been annoyed by the fact that you eat. That is not me softening a rebuke. Matthew 6:32 calls them needs and puts the Father's knowledge in front of them, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person hear that without hearing a scolding underneath it.

What worry actually produces

Here is the sentence in that passage that I could not get around.

He asks which of you by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature.

That is a question about output. What did the worrying make. And the honest answer, if a person sits with it, is nothing. Not one inch. Worry has never once put money in an account, finished a task, or changed a number.

Planning does. Working does. Asking somebody does. Worry is the thing that happens instead of those, and it feels close enough to them that a person can do it for a decade and believe they were working the problem.

That was the hardest thing I have had to admit about myself in this area. Those hours in the dark were not diligence. They were the imitation of diligence, and they cost me sleep I needed for the actual work in the morning.

You have been paying for something that does not deliver, and God has never once asked that payment of you. Matthew 6:27 asks the output question directly, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person answer it honestly without falling into shame about it.

Seek first is a reordering, not a deletion

Now the instruction, and this is where people misread Him.

Seek ye first the kingdom of God. First. That word is doing all the work in the sentence, and first is a position, not an exclusion. He does not say seek only. He does not say do not seek. He says put it first, and then says the other things get added.

That is an order of operations, not a ban.

And I want to be extremely careful here, because that verse is one of the most abused in the Bible. It is not a transaction. He is not saying be spiritual enough and money appears. There is no amount promised there, no timeline, and no mechanism. He is describing a life with its weight in the right place, and He tells you not to worry about tomorrow in the very next verse, which is not a promise about tomorrow's balance.

You are able to put first things first, and that has never once required you to pretend the other things do not matter. Matthew 6:33 says first and not only, and the Holy Spirit is the one who actually reorders a person's interior life, which no amount of deciding has ever managed.

Sufficient unto the day

There is one more line and it might be the most practical sentence Jesus ever said about money.

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Sufficient unto the day. Today has enough in it. He is not denying that tomorrow has problems. He says tomorrow will bring its own and today already has a full set, so do not import.

That is not optimism. That is triage. He is telling a person to work the day they are standing in.

You have today, and He has never once asked you to carry a week at once. Matthew 6:34 says sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person inside a single day when their mind is trying to live in four of them.
