ProvisionPhilippians 4:12

They Only Ever Taught Me Half of Paul's Sentence

This message is for the reader who was taught the abasing half of Paul's contentment and never once the abounding half

I was twenty one years old before I ever heard the whole verse.

Not because anybody hid it. Because in the world I grew up in there was a version of that sentence that got quoted constantly, and it stopped in the middle, and nobody in the room ever noticed that it stopped, including me.

The half I knew was this: I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. That is a real verse and it is a good one and it kept my family standing through years that should have knocked them flat. I am not going to say one word against it.

Then one afternoon I read the next verse for myself, and it kept going.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

Both. He says both, four separate times, in one sentence. Abased and abound. Full and hungry. He is not describing a man who learned to survive lack. He is describing a man who had to learn two different skills, and he names the second one out loud, and in twenty one years nobody had ever once read me that half.

He says it four times in one verse

Read it slowly, because the repetition is doing something.

I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (Philippians 4:12, King James Version)

Both, both, both, both.

That is not accidental. A man writing from a jail cell about contentment goes out of his way, four times in one breath, to make sure nobody walks off with only one side of it.

And notice the order. He puts abased first and abound second, every time. He is not building toward the poor half as the holy conclusion. He is putting them side by side as two conditions a person passes through, and he claims to have been schooled in each.

You are allowed to have both halves, and Scripture has never once handed you only one of them. That is not a stretch on the text. Philippians 4:12 says both four times, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person hear the half of a verse they were never given without feeling like they are betraying anybody.

Contentment is a skill, not a temperament

Here is the other thing hiding in that sentence, and it changed how I pray.

He says I have learned. He says I am instructed. Those are school words. In the Greek behind it, one of them is the word for being initiated into something, taught a trade, brought through a training.

He did not have it. He got it. Over time, in both directions, and he had to be taught the abounding half just like the abasing half.

That means it is not a personality. Some people are naturally calm about money and that is not what he is describing. He is describing something a man acquired through repetition and instruction, which means somebody who does not have it yet is not defective. They are early.

You have not failed at something you were never trained in, and He has never once expected a finished thing out of an untaught person. Philippians 4:12 uses the language of learning on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does the actual teaching in a person over years.

Why the abounding half is harder

I want to say a hard thing about my own house, and I want to say it carefully, because I love the people in it.

We knew how to be abased. We were excellent at it. My mother could stretch a week of groceries into eleven days and she never once complained where we could hear her. That is a real skill and it is a holy one and I watched it my whole childhood.

What nobody in that house had was the other half. Nobody knew what to do with more. And I do not think that is a small thing, because a person who has only learned the abasing half will unconsciously arrange their life to stay in the condition they know how to be godly in.

That is not laziness. That is competence pulling somebody toward the room they know.

And my father would push back on me here, and he would have a point. He would say that abounding is where men lose their souls, and he has watched it happen, and he is not wrong about what he has seen. I have watched it too.

He is right that the danger is real. Paul just refuses to let the danger be an excuse for not learning the skill.

You are able to be taught the half you never got, and God has never once thought you were too far along to start. The word says Paul was instructed in both, and the Holy Spirit is the one who teaches a grown person something their childhood never covered.

What he is not saying

I have to guard this, because this verse gets pulled in the other direction just as hard.

Paul is not saying God wants him to abound. He does not promise abundance, he does not predict it, and he never once treats it as a reward for anything. In the very next verse he says he can do all things through Christ who strengthens him, and the all things he is talking about is exactly this: being full and being hungry, both.

That verse is not about winning. It is about surviving both weathers with the same Lord.

So this is not a message about getting more. There is no amount in it anywhere and there is no promise about anybody's circumstances. It is a message about being taught the whole sentence, so that a person is not quietly disqualifying themselves from half of a life God never fenced off.

You are not being sold anything here, and no part of what is true about you today depends on a number. Philippians 4:13 puts the strength for both conditions in Christ and not in a bank, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person free of mixture while they read a passage about money.

The breakthrough

So let me say what I think is being spoken over somebody right now.

You are holding a whole verse now, and half of it has been kept from you long enough. I am not correcting anybody's grandmother. Philippians 4:12 says both four times in one sentence, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my reading who makes that land in a person who has been living off the first clause for thirty years.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Paul says he was instructed in how to abound. Those two are the same idea from two directions, and neither one of them is a promise that anything is coming. They are both about capacity: what a person is able to be, in whatever weather they are standing in.

You are being taught right now, and the learning has never once required you to already know how. The written word calls it instruction on purpose, and the Spirit of God is the one who does that instruction in an ordinary person over ordinary years.

I am still in school on this. I am not the graduate telling you about it. I found the second half of a sentence at twenty one and I am still learning what to do with it, and my father and I still see it differently, and he is still my father.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Half a verse, you are not going to keep running my life. Philippians 4:12 says both how to be abased and how to abound, so let go of my mouth in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of the room I was never taught, you have no authority over me. The word says Paul was instructed in both, and by the Holy Spirit I am learning the half I never got.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You gave Paul the schooling for both weathers. Your word says he learned to be full and to be hungry, so teach me the half nobody taught me and keep me Yours in either one.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
