Diligence1 Samuel 22:2

Everyone in Distress and in Debt and Discontented

This message is for the reader who is certain they are the wrong raw material for anything worth building

The most famous fighting unit in the Old Testament started as four hundred men in a cave, and Scripture tells you exactly what kind of men they were.

Everyone that was in distress, and everyone that was in debt, and everyone that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them.

That is the recruitment description. Not the best men in the country. Not veterans. Not volunteers with references. The three categories are: people in trouble, people who owed money, and people who were bitter.

And the writer does not soften any of it. He does not say they had potential. He does not say they were diamonds in the rough. He tells you their condition plainly and then moves on.

Read forward far enough and some of those same men have names in a list that reads like legend. One of them killed eight hundred at one time. Three of them broke through an entire enemy camp because David said out loud that he was thirsty, and then he refused to drink it and poured it out because it had cost too much.

Same men. The cave list and the honor roll are the same people, and there is a long ordinary stretch in between that nobody writes songs about.

The description is not flattering and it is not an insult

Read it, and notice how matter of fact it is.

And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men. (1 Samuel 22:2, King James Version)

Distress, debt, discontent.

There is no contempt in that sentence and there is no pity in it either. The writer is telling you the starting condition of a group of men, the way a builder tells you what the ground was like before anything got put on it.

And here is what the passage does not do. It does not say they became worthy. It never revisits the description to say they cleaned up. It just keeps telling the story, and by the time you meet them again they are doing things that made it into permanent record.

You are not the wrong material, and God has never once required a person to be presentable before He would build with them. That is not me flattering a hard situation. 1 Samuel 22:2 gives the honest condition of four hundred men without one word of contempt, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person hear their own condition described accurately and not feel disqualified by it.

What actually changed them

I want to be careful here, because it would be easy to say they got their act together, and the text does not say that.

What the text gives us is time, a leader, and a long stretch of hard shared work in the wilderness. Years of it. Moving, hiding, protecting people, being hunted, learning to operate together under pressure with no resources.

That is not a transformation story. That is training. The distress and the debt did not evaporate on the first day. Those men became what they became by doing the work for a long time next to somebody who was doing it with them.

And that is the most encouraging version, because a transformation is something that happens to a person and training is something a person can start.

You are able to be trained, and a bad starting condition has never once been an obstacle to that. 1 Samuel 22 puts a cave at the beginning of the most decorated list in that history, and the Spirit of God is the one who does patient work in a person across ordinary years.

David was not in great shape either

Do not miss where David is standing when this happens.

He is in a cave. He has been anointed king already and he is living in a hole in the ground, running from a man who wants him dead. In the chapter right before this he had faked being insane in front of a foreign king to get out of a room alive.

That is the man these four hundred came to. He was not running a program. He was in trouble himself, and the men who came to him were in trouble, and out of that came something that a nation remembered for a thousand years.

Nobody in that cave was qualified. That is not a detail, that is the setting.

You are not waiting on somebody qualified, and He has never once needed anybody's situation to be stable first. 1 Samuel 22:1 puts David in a cave when the four hundred arrive, and the Holy Spirit is the one who begins things in circumstances nobody would have chosen.

The three who broke through the camp

I want to tell the end of that story, because it is the picture of what those men became.

Years later, David is in a stronghold and there is an enemy garrison in his hometown, and he says out loud, almost to himself, that he wishes somebody would give him a drink from the well by the gate of Bethlehem.

Three of those men heard him say it. They broke through the enemy camp, drew water from that well, and carried it back.

And David would not drink it. He poured it out on the ground as an offering, and said, is not this the blood of the men that went in jeopardy of their lives? He would not treat it as a beverage because of what it cost.

Those are cave men. Distress, debt, and discontent, twenty years earlier.

You are on a road that goes somewhere, and the beginning has never once determined the ending. 2 Samuel 23:16 has three of them do a thing that got written down forever, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the long quiet work that gets a person from one list to the other.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not disqualified, and your condition has never once been the reason God would not build. I am not talking anybody's situation up. 1 Samuel 22:2 says distress and debt and discontent without softening a syllable, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my reading who takes an accurate description and makes it land as an open door.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Read that against a cave full of four hundred men who had nothing. He gives the power. The power gets spent in ordinary training over ordinary years, and the starting condition of the person is not a variable in the sentence.

He was bad at it first. Every single one of them was. That is not a discouragement, that is the pattern, and there has never been another one.

You have a starting point, and He has never once refused to begin from where somebody actually is. 1 Samuel 22:2 begins a legendary company in a cave, and the Spirit of God is the one who starts a work in a person on the day they are in the worst shape.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Verdict on my raw material, you are not the record and I am done with you. 1 Samuel 22:2 puts distress and debt and discontent at the start of the greatest roster in that history, so let go in the name of Jesus.
  2. Shame that says everybody else started better, you have no seat at this cave. The word says four hundred came in trouble and became what they became, and by the Holy Spirit I am starting from where I actually am.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You have never once required me to be presentable first. Your word starts a legendary company in a hole in the ground, so I bring You the shape I am in and I start today.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
