Honor2 Samuel 15:6

He Stood at the Gate and Was Right About Everything

This message is for the reader who is right about a family failure and is starting to gather an audience for it

The most effective takeover in the Old Testament was carried out by a man who never told a single lie.

Absalom got up early and stood beside the way of the gate, which is where people came in with disputes that needed judging. And when somebody arrived with a case, he would call them over and ask where they were from, and listen, and then say the sentence he said to everybody.

See, thy matters are good and right; but there is no man deputed of the king to hear thee.

And here is the thing. He was correct.

David's administration of justice had genuinely broken down. People were coming a long way with real grievances and going home unheard. Absalom was not inventing a problem, he was naming an actual one, and every person who walked away from that gate had been told the truth about their own situation.

And then, when a man would bow to him, he would not let him. He would put out his hand and take him and kiss him. He treated ordinary people with a warmth the palace was not giving them.

For four years.

And the text says: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel.

Being right was the whole mechanism

Read what he told them, because there is no falsehood in it.

And on this manner did Absalom to all Israel that came to the king for judgment: so Absalom stole the hearts of the men of Israel. (2 Samuel 15:6, King James Version)

Stole the hearts.

He did not persuade them with a lie. He agreed with them about something true, repeatedly, warmly, in a place where they were already frustrated, and over four years that accumulated into a following.

That is why this passage is dangerous and useful at the same time. Most people assume a person has to be wrong to do harm in a family or a church. Absalom was right, and it did not save anybody anything, and a civil war came out of that gate.

You are able to be correct and still be doing damage, and being right has never once been the same as being constructive. That is not me discounting a real grievance. 2 Samuel 15:3 has him state an accurate problem, and it is the Holy Spirit who shows a person what their accuracy is actually producing.

The tell is who he talked to

Here is the diagnostic, and it is simple.

He never once took it to his father.

Four years of standing at a gate telling strangers about a failure in the king's household, and there is no record anywhere of him walking into that room and saying it to the man who could have fixed it.

That is the tell, and it works in any family. If a thing is wrong and I am telling six people who cannot change it and not the one person who can, then the telling is not about fixing anything. It is doing something else for me.

Usually it is doing one of two things: it is getting me agreement, which feels like justice, or it is building a coalition, which feels like safety.

You have one person who can actually do something about this, and everybody else has never once been able to. 2 Samuel 15 has him take a true complaint to everyone except his father, and the Spirit of God is the one who shows somebody the difference between resolving a thing and collecting support about it.

Absalom had a real wound

I have to say this, because a message that makes him a simple villain will not help anybody.

His sister had been assaulted by their half brother, and David had done nothing about it. Nothing. The text says he was angry and that is the extent of the action recorded. Absalom waited two years and then killed the man himself, and then lived in exile for three, and then came back to Jerusalem and his father would not see him for two more years.

So this is not a spoiled prince. This is a man whose sister was destroyed, whose father would not act, and who was then frozen out for five years.

His grievance was real and his father genuinely failed. And what he built out of that grievance still tore a nation apart and cost him his life.

Both are true, and anybody who wants to use this passage to shame somebody with a real wound has misread it badly.

You are not being blamed for the wound, and God has never once treated a real injury as an overreaction. 2 Samuel 13 records the failure without excusing it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds a person's genuine grievance without letting it become their whole architecture.

What David did with the gate

There is one detail at the end of that story that has stayed with me for years.

When it is all over, David weeps for him. O Absalom, my son, my son. And Joab has to tell the king to get up and go speak to his own soldiers, because his grief is humiliating the men who just saved his life.

The father who would not talk to him for two years wept over him uncontrollably when it was too late.

Both of those men had something they would not say to the other, and everything else grew in that silence. Four years at a gate, five years of not speaking, and one conversation might have changed the whole account.

You have a conversation available that they may not have, and He has never once made you wait for them to start it. 2 Samuel 18:33 has a father grieve what he would not speak, and the Spirit of God is the one who gives somebody the courage to be the one who goes first.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are right, and being right has never once been enough to make a course of action good. I am not dismissing anybody's grievance. 2 Samuel 15:3 has Absalom say something entirely true, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my warning who shows a person what their true sentences are building when they say them in the wrong rooms.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Some of the hardest getting anybody does is the ability to hold a real grievance without spending it on an audience, and that capacity is built the same way the rest are: slowly, badly at first, with the Spirit supplying what is missing.

I write about a teaching in public and I try very hard not to write about a man. I do not always get that right. But the line is real and I know where it is: the doctrine is public and belongs in the open, and the father belongs in a room with me.

You have a Father who is not asking you to swallow it, and He has never once told anybody to pretend they were not hurt. 2 Samuel 13 keeps the wrong on the record, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a person's real complaint to the only place it can actually go.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Audience I have been gathering, you are not vindication and I am dismissing you. 2 Samuel 15:6 says he stole the hearts of the men of Israel with true sentences, so let go of me in the name of Jesus.
  2. Comfort of being agreed with, you have no authority over where I take this. The word has a real grievance go to everyone except the one man who could act, and by the Holy Spirit I am going to the right room.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and some of it is holding a true thing without spending it. Your word keeps the wrong on the record and never once asks me to pretend, so I bring it to You and then I go to the person.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on

2 Samuel 15:6
