Dependency2 Chronicles 16:9

He Paid for Safety With What Was Set Apart

This message is for the reader who bought their own security with something they had promised to God

There was a king who had already seen God do the impossible for him once.

Early in his reign an army came at him that was more than twice his size. A million men, the chronicle says. And that king prayed one of the best prayers in the Old Testament, and he said, Lord, it is nothing with Thee to help, whether with many or with them that have no power, and we rest on Thee, and in Thy name we go against this multitude.

And they won. Enormously.

So this is not a man who does not know what God does. He has the story. He could tell it at a dinner and the room would go quiet.

Then, twenty five years later, another threat comes. Smaller this time. A neighboring king starts fortifying a town on his border, cutting off his supply road, and it is a real problem and a serious one.

And this time he goes into the house of God, takes the silver and the gold out of the treasuries, and sends it to a foreign king to hire him as an ally.

It worked, by the way. The alliance held, the threat withdrew, the border was fine. Everything he paid for, he got.

And a prophet came and told him he had made the worst trade of his life.

The second crisis is harder than the first

Here is what I cannot get past, and it is the reason this passage is in a category about dependency.

The first time, he had nothing. No alliance was available, no money would have helped, the numbers were absurd. He leaned on God because there was literally nothing else in the room to lean on.

The second time, he had options. He had a treasury. He had diplomatic relationships. He had twenty five years of being a competent king, and competence is exactly what makes the second crisis harder, because a person with resources has to choose to depend, and a person with nothing does not.

That is the trap in a life that is going well.

You are not further from God because things got easier, and He has never once preferred you desperate. That is not me flattering anybody's success. 2 Chronicles 16 puts the failure in the comfortable years and not the hard ones, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a person leaning when leaning is no longer the only option.

What the prophet actually said

The message that comes to him is famous for one line and the line is usually quoted with the wrong tone.

For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. (2 Chronicles 16:9, King James Version)

People quote that as a warning, like God is scanning for offenders. Read it again. The eyes are running to and fro looking for somebody to be strong on behalf of.

He is not hunting. He is recruiting.

And the tragedy the prophet names is not that Asa broke a rule. It is that God was actively looking for somebody to be strong for, and a man with a treasury did not need Him that week, so the offer went past him.

You are being looked for, and He has never once been scanning the earth for a reason to leave you. 2 Chronicles 16:9 says He shows Himself strong on behalf of, which is help language and not court language, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that verse land as an invitation.

Every dependency creates a loyalty, and he found out

Here is what happened next, and it is the practical consequence rather than a punishment.

The prophet tells him that because he leaned on that king instead of on God, from now on he has wars. And that is exactly what an alliance does. The moment a man's safety runs through another man's army, his enemies and that man's enemies become the same list, and he has inherited a set of problems he never chose.

He did not just buy protection. He bought a side.

That is the mechanism this whole site keeps naming. Whatever you lean on, you belong to, and the belonging comes with obligations that were never mentioned at the time.

You have been buying more than you meant to, and no arrangement has ever once sold safety by itself. The written word ties Asa's wars directly to Asa's alliance, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person see the whole invoice on something they already signed.

The part that makes me careful

I have to say the hard end of this honestly, because the chapter does not stop where I would like it to.

Asa did not take the correction. He got angry, he put the prophet in prison, and he oppressed some of his own people at the same time. And three years later his feet became diseased, and the chronicler notes that even then he did not seek the Lord but only the physicians.

That last line is not telling anybody to avoid doctors. Doctors are a gift and this site will never say otherwise, and a person reading this should keep every appointment they have. The chronicler's point is about a pattern: a man who had learned to solve things with resources kept solving things with resources, right to the end, and never once went back to the room where he had prayed that prayer at the beginning.

That is what makes this a dependency story rather than a money story. The silver was a symptom.

You are still able to go back to that room, and no run of years has ever once locked the door. 2 Chronicles 16 records a man who did not, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes going back feel possible to somebody who has been solving things alone for a long time.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not a lost cause, and one bad trade has never once ended what God is doing with a person. I am not softening the chapter. 2 Chronicles 16 ends badly and I have said so, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my encouragement who separates a warning meant to turn somebody from a verdict meant to bury them.

Hear the verse the way it was written. His eyes are running to and fro through the whole earth, right now, looking for somebody to be strong on behalf of. That is a God who wants to be needed, which is a strange and wonderful thing to say about the Almighty, and it is exactly what the sentence says.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says He gives the power to get. So the resources in your hand are not the enemy here. Asa's treasury was not the problem. The problem was a man who had a treasury and stopped needing a Father, and those two things do not have to travel together.

You have a Father, and the thing you bought your safety with has never once been able to be one. 2 Chronicles 16:9 says He shows Himself strong on behalf of them whose heart is toward Him, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns a heart back without humiliating it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fear that bought me an army, you are not wisdom and I am done paying you. 2 Chronicles 16:9 says His eyes run to and fro to show Himself strong, so get out of my treasury in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of solving it alone, you have no authority over my next hard week. The word says He shows Himself strong on behalf of them whose heart is toward Him, and by the Holy Spirit my heart is turning back today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You have never once asked me to stop needing You. Your word says Your eyes are running through the whole earth looking for somebody to be strong for, so here I am, and I am asking.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
