ProvisionMatthew 14:16

Give Ye Them to Eat Was Not a Suggestion

This message is for the reader who has decided that what they are holding is too small to be any part of the answer

It was getting late and there were thousands of people out in a field with nothing to eat.

The disciples did the sensible thing. They came to Jesus and said, this is a desert place, the day is nearly gone, send the crowd away so they can go into the villages and buy themselves food. That is not a cold suggestion. That is twelve tired men doing responsible math. There is no store. There is no money. There is no plan. Cut it here before it gets worse.

And Jesus said something that must have landed like a joke.

He said: they do not need to go away. Give ye them to eat.

Twelve men. Feed them.

Now they had already checked, because they say it out loud a second later: we have nothing here but five loaves and two fishes. And they were right about the inventory. They had counted, and the count was correct, and the count was almost funny against the size of that field.

And His answer to their correct arithmetic is four words that I have not been able to put down since I first read them.

Bring them hither to me.

He gave the job to the ones with nothing

Read the exchange, because the order of it is the whole point.

But Jesus said unto them, They need not depart; give ye them to eat. And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes. He said, Bring them hither to me. (Matthew 14:16-18, King James Version)

Give ye them to eat. He puts the assignment on the men who have five loaves between twelve of them.

He was not confused about their resources. He knew exactly what was in that basket. And He handed them the job anyway, before anything multiplied, while the only thing in the world they could see was how little it was.

You are being handed something you cannot cover, and He has never once misjudged what is in your hands. That is not a motivational reading of a miracle. Matthew 14:16 gives the assignment to the ones with almost nothing, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person hear an assignment like that without immediately arguing back.

The word that had to come first

Here is what I missed for years, and it changes how the whole thing works.

He does not multiply the bread in the basket. He says bring it here. The little has to leave their hands and get into His before anything happens to it, and they have to be the ones to carry it over.

That is a small physical act and it is enormous. Handing over five loaves when five loaves is everything a man owns is not a symbolic gesture. It is the entire risk.

And notice what happens after. He blesses it, breaks it, and gives it back to the disciples, and the disciples give it to the crowd. It multiplies in the distribution. Not in the basket. Not on the ground. In the passing out.

So the miracle happened in twelve pairs of hands that were moving.

You have something that has to move before it does anything, and it has never once been meant to sit still. Matthew 14:19 says He gave it back to the disciples and the disciples gave it to the multitude, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a person willing to start handing out what looks like nothing.

They were not wrong about the number

I want to protect somebody here, because the way this story usually gets preached puts the disciples in the doghouse, and I do not read it that way.

They were not faithless. They were tired and honest. Five loaves is five loaves. That was a true report about a real basket, and Jesus never once corrects their count. He does not say they have more than they think. He says bring Me what is actually there.

That is the difference between this and the kind of teaching that tells people to lie about their situation until it improves. Nobody in this story pretends. The number stays the number right up until the moment God does something with it.

You are allowed to know exactly how little it is, and He has never once required you to talk yourself out of the facts. Matthew 14:17 lets the disciples say the number out loud with no rebuke attached, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps honesty and faith in the same person at the same time.

Somebody had to have brought lunch

One more thing, and John's account is the one that carries it.

John says the five loaves and two fish came from a boy in the crowd. A kid had brought lunch. That is the only food in a field of thousands, and it belonged to somebody who was not important, who was not consulted, and who almost certainly did not think of himself as part of the plan.

Everybody else in that field had come with nothing, or had come with something and eaten it already, or had come with something and kept quiet about it.

The whole thing ran on one person's ordinary lunch and one person's willingness to hand it over.

You are closer to the middle of this than it feels, and God has never once needed a large person to do a large thing. John 6:9 puts a boy's lunch at the center of the biggest feeding in the Gospels, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an ordinary person willing to be counted in.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody in this.

You are not disqualified by the size of it, and the arithmetic has never once been the deciding factor. I am not inflating what anybody has. Matthew 14:17 records five loaves and two fish accurately, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a good feeling about a situation who makes a person able to bring it forward anyway.

Now the honest half. I am not telling you that if you hand your small thing over, God is going to multiply your money. That is not what this is and I will not say it. There is no promise in this chapter about anybody's account and there is no formula in it anywhere.

What is here is a picture of how He works. He gives the power to get, He asks for what is already in a hand, and then He does what only He does with it. Deuteronomy 8:18 and Matthew 14 are saying the same thing from two directions: the strength is His, the hands are ours, and both are in the room.

You have a part in this, and He has never once meant for you to only watch. The written word says give ye them to eat and then gives the bread back to the men to hand out, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves an ordinary person from the edge of a field into the middle of it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Voice that calls what I have too small, you are not telling the truth. Matthew 14:18 says bring them hither to me, and He asked for five loaves on purpose, so leave in the name of Jesus.
  2. Habit of ruling myself out, you have no place in this field. The word gives the assignment to the men with almost nothing in the basket, and by the Holy Spirit I am bringing what I actually have today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You have never once despised the size of what is in my hands. Your word fed a field off a boy's lunch, so I bring You what I have and I go hand it out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
