He Kept Going Back to the Room That Cost Him

The strongest man who ever lived went back to the same house four times.

Three of those times somebody asked him directly how he could be tied up and taken, and three times he gave a wrong answer, and three times he woke up to men in the room trying to do exactly what he had just described. Ropes. Cords. A loom. Every single time, the thing he said was tested on him within hours.

Read that again, because it is not a story about a man who was tricked. He had proof. Not a suspicion, not a bad feeling, but three separate mornings of hard physical evidence that he was in a room where the words out of his mouth were being sold.

And he went back.

That is the part nobody preaches, and it is the only part I actually understand, because it is the most human thing in the whole book. He did not go back because he was stupid. He went back because that room did something for him that nothing else in his life did, and knowing what it cost had never once been the same thing as being able to leave.

The saddest sentence in his whole story

Here is the verse, and the last five words of it are the worst in the chapter.

And she said, The Philistines be upon thee, Samson. And he awoke out of his sleep, and said, I will go out as at other times before, and shake myself. And he wist not that the LORD was departed from him. (Judges 16:20, King James Version)

He wist not. He did not know.

He expected to stand up and be who he had always been, because he had stood up and been that man every other time. Nothing in the room looked different. Nothing felt different. And the thing that mattered most had already gone, quietly, while he was asleep.

That is how it works, and it is why this is not a story about a dramatic fall. There was no moment where he chose to lose it. There were four visits, and on the fourth one something that had been leaving finished leaving.

You are not going to be ambushed by God, and He has never once removed Himself from a person in secret to catch them out. That is not softening a hard verse. Judges 16:20 records what Samson did not know and it never once says the Lord was hiding, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the opposite work of warning a person clearly and early.

Knowing the cost is not the same as leaving

Here is the thing that makes this passage useful rather than just sad.

Everybody assumes that if a person truly understood what something was costing them, they would stop. That is the whole theory behind most advice. Show them the damage and they will change.

Samson had the damage in high definition three times.

Information was never the missing piece. What that room gave him was not tested by the mornings, because the mornings were about consequences and the room was about something underneath consequences: rest, being wanted, not having to be the strongest man in the world for a few hours.

A person does not leave a place like that because of a fact. They leave it when something else is actually holding them.

You have not failed at understanding, and God has never once thought your problem was a shortage of information. Judges 16 gives a man three demonstrations and shows they did not move him, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a person in a way that facts cannot.

What was actually leaving

Now the part that I think is the real subject of this chapter.

The hair was never the power. The hair was a sign of a vow, and the vow was the arrangement he had with God from before he was born, and he had been giving pieces of that away for years before anybody ever got near his head.

He had already broken the other parts of it. He had touched what he was not to touch. He had gone where he was not to go. The hair was the last visible thing and it was the last to go, and by then it was a formality.

So the loss was not a haircut. It was the end of a long, slow, comfortable erosion that never once looked like a decision.

You are not one bad night away from ruin, and He has never once been waiting to catch you on a single mistake. Judges 16 shows a vow being worn down over years and not shattered in one evening, and the Holy Spirit is the one who alerts a person to erosion while there is still plenty of time.

The verse almost nobody quotes

I am not going to end this in that room, because Scripture does not.

There is a sentence right after his capture, and it is easy to miss because it comes in the middle of the worst description in his life. He is blind, he is in a prison, he is grinding grain like an animal, and the writer says: howbeit the hair of his head began to grow again after he was shaven.

Began to grow again.

Nothing had been fixed. He was still blind and still in prison, and the growing started anyway, on its own, in the dark, while he was at the lowest point of his life and doing nothing about it.

You have something growing back right now, and it has never once required your circumstances to improve first. Judges 16:22 puts that sentence in the middle of a prison on purpose, and the Spirit of God is the one who starts a work in a person before anything in their life looks different.
