Wells You Did Not Dig and the Warning That Came With Them

Right before a whole generation walked into the best years of their lives, God told them exactly what was waiting.

Great cities they had not built. Houses full of good things they had not filled. Wells they had not dug. Vineyards and olive trees they had not planted. He lists it out like a man handing over a set of keys, item by item, and every single item comes with the same phrase attached.

Which thou buildedst not. Which thou filledst not. Which thou diggedst not. Which thou plantedst not.

Four times He says it. He is not being modest on their behalf. He is putting a fact on the record before they get there, because He knows exactly what a person does with a well they did not dig after about eighteen months of drinking out of it.

They forget it was dug.

And then He says the sentence that the whole passage was built to deliver. Then beware, lest thou forget the Lord.

He said it four times on purpose

Here is the list, and the repetition is the point of it.

And houses full of all good things, which thou filledst not, and wells digged, which thou diggedst not, vineyards and olive trees, which thou plantedst not; when thou shalt have eaten and be full; then beware lest thou forget the LORD. (Deuteronomy 6:11-12, King James Version)

Four disclaimers in one sentence, and then a warning that begins with the words when thou shalt have eaten and be full.

Notice He does not warn them about the lean years. He is not worried about how they will handle a famine. He is worried about how they will handle a full stomach, because a full stomach is where forgetting happens.

You are living on things other hands built, and remembering that has never once made you smaller. That is not a guilt trip. Deuteronomy 6:11 says which thou diggedst not four separate ways, and it is the Holy Spirit who keeps a person's memory honest when their circumstances get comfortable.

Inheritance and entitlement are one sentence apart

Here is the distinction this passage is drawing, and it is a fine line with a huge difference on either side of it.

An inheritance is something received that somebody else paid for, and the receiver knows it. Entitlement is the exact same thing after the knowing wears off.

Same well. Same water. The only variable is whether the person drinking still remembers there was digging.

And that is why God front loads the warning. He does not wait until they are twenty years into the land. He says it while they are still on the wrong side of the river, because forgetting is not a decision anybody makes, it is a thing that happens quietly to people who are doing fine.

You have not become ungrateful by being comfortable, and He has never once punished a person for eating well. Deuteronomy 6:12 says beware lest thou forget and not beware lest thou be full, and the Spirit of God is the one who does the actual remembering work inside somebody over years.

Two verses that live in the same warning

I have to connect this to the other chapter, because they are the same speech and this site turns on it.

Deuteronomy 8:17 has the exact same anxiety in different words: do not say in thine heart, my power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. And then verse eighteen: but thou shalt remember the Lord thy God, for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth.

So the correction is never aimed at the getting. Not once. It is aimed at the sentence a person says in their heart afterward.

That is why this site can say go get it and stay honest at the same time. God gives the power. A person spends it. And the whole danger, the entire warning, both times He gives it, is about forgetting the source and not about having the thing.

You are free to build and free to eat, and the guard has never once been placed on your hands. Deuteronomy 8:18 puts the remembering and the getting in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a working person from quietly crediting themselves.

The people whose names nobody says

Now let me bring this home, because I have a specific thing in mind.

Everybody reading this is living on somebody's work. Somebody paid for a room you sat in. Somebody stayed up with you. Somebody in a generation before you did something hard so that a thing that is ordinary for you was possible at all, and most of the time we do not know their names.

In my family it is a woman who fed people out of a kitchen that had no business feeding anybody. She was doing arithmetic on the back of envelopes while the rest of us were being fed by it, and she never once said a word about the cost.

I disagree with people I love about a lot of things. I am not going to pretend I do not. But I will not stand anywhere and act like I built the well.

You have people behind you, and heaven has never once let their work go unrecorded. Deuteronomy 6:11 names the digging and the building on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings a specific person to a person's mind at the exact right moment.
