They Brought Out the Coats She Had Made

This message is for the reader who thinks they have nothing to give because they have no money

There is a woman in Acts who gets a few verses, and the way Luke describes her life is by listing what she made with her hands.

Her name was Tabitha, and in Greek Dorcas, and Luke says she was full of good works and almsdeeds which she did. That is the summary. Not a title, not a position, not a public role. Full of good works.

And then she got sick and died.

And what happens in that room is one of the most human things in the whole book. The believers send for Peter, and when he arrives they take him upstairs, and all the widows stood by him weeping, and they showed him the coats and garments which Dorcas made while she was with them.

They did not tell him about her. They held things up.

Every one of those women was standing in a room holding something she had sewn. That was the eulogy. Cloth, in hands, held up so a stranger could see it.

Nobody said a word about money. Luke does not tell us whether she had any.

The record was physical

Read what they actually did when Peter walked in, because it is not a speech.

And all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. (Acts 9:39, King James Version)

Shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made.

They held up objects. That is the account of a life, in Scripture, forever: things a woman made for people who could not have bought them.

And notice who was in the room. Widows. In that world a widow was frequently the poorest person in a community, and clothing was expensive, and a coat was not a small item. Somebody making clothes for widows was doing something with real economic weight and doing it with a needle instead of a purse.

You are able to produce something real, and it has never once required you to have money first. That is not me making a small life sound big. Acts 9:39 has the evidence held up in people's hands, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person see what their own hands have actually been doing.

Almsdeeds which she did

There is a phrase in the earlier verse that is easy to skim and it is precise.

Full of good works and almsdeeds which she did.

Which she did. Luke could have written that she was generous, or kind, or charitable. Instead he attaches the works to the verb and then repeats it: things she did.

That is how the Bible tends to describe generosity. It very rarely reports a feeling. It reports actions, quantities, and objects, and it lets the reader work out the heart from the record.

That should be freeing for the person who does not feel especially generous. Nobody in that room was assessing Dorcas's inner life. They were holding coats.

You have a record made of things you actually did, and a feeling has never once been what Scripture counts. Acts 9:36 attaches the works to a verb on purpose, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see their own life the way heaven has been recording it.

What money cannot buy from a stranger

I want to name something about the specific form of what she gave, because it matters.

A coat sewn by somebody who knows you is not the same object as a coat bought for you.

A person who makes something has spent hours on the thing, and the hours are in it, and everybody involved knows that. That is why those women were holding them up and crying rather than describing her character. The garment carried the time.

That is worth hearing for anybody who has money and thinks the check settles it. It might. Sometimes a check is exactly right and I am not going to argue against it.

But there is a category of giving that only exists where somebody's own hours went in, and it is not available at any price, and the person who has time and no money is not the poorer giver in that room.

You have hours that nobody can buy, and money has never once been able to produce what those make. Acts 9:39 has the widows weeping over the objects themselves, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person see their own time as the resource it is.

And then Peter raised her

I have to include what happens next, but carefully.

Peter put them all out, kneeled down, prayed, turned to the body and said Tabitha, arise. And she opened her eyes and sat up.

That happened, and it is in the account, and I am not going to shrink it. I am also not going to build anything on it, because that is not a promise anybody can hand to a grieving person, and I will not pretend otherwise.

What I will point at is the reason the church sent for Peter at all. Two men walked to another town to get him. Somebody thought this particular death was worth a journey.

That is not nothing. A whole community moved because a woman who made coats had died, and that is a measure of what her hands had built in that place over years.

You are building something in people that shows up later, and quiet work has never once gone unnoticed by a room. Acts 9:38 has two men sent on a journey because of her, and the Spirit of God is the one who is keeping an account of ordinary usefulness.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not on the sidelines of this, and having no money has never once put you there. I am not flattering anybody. Acts 9:39 has the evidence of a life held up in the hands of the poorest women in a town, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my point who lets a person see their own hands honestly.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. And this is where that verse cuts widest, because power is not a synonym for money. Power is capacity. Hands that can do something, hours that can be spent, a skill that got built over years.

Everybody reading this has some. Nobody has none. And the whole message of this site is that what He gave is real and gets spent by the person holding it, and there is no version of that sentence that requires an account balance first.

You have hands and hours, and He has never once measured a person by what was in their purse. Acts 9:39 has coats and garments held up as the record, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary useful life into something a whole town remembers.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Belief that I have nothing to give, you are not true and I am done repeating you. Acts 9:39 has widows holding up coats a woman made with her own hands, so get out of my mouth in the name of Jesus.
  2. Comparison with people who write checks, you have no authority over my hands. The word calls her full of good works and never once mentions her means, and by the Holy Spirit I am making one thing for one person this week.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and that power was never a bank balance. Your word says full of good works and almsdeeds which she did, so I use what is in my hands today and I hand it over myself.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
