GenerosityMark 12:44

The Poorest Churches in the Region Had to Beg to Give

This message is for the reader who is certain their tightness is caused by their circumstances

A woman who had almost nothing put two small coins into a collection box and walked out, and a teacher across the courtyard stopped mid conversation and called His students over to watch her go.

She had not made a speech. Nobody in that courtyard had noticed her, and the coins were worth so little that the sound they made was the smallest sound anything made in that room all day.

He told them she had put in more than all of them.

She had done the sum before she left the house. Everyone in poverty does. She knew what those two coins were against what was in the jar at home, and she knew what she would be eating that evening because of it, and she walked in and put them in anyway and did not look back to see whether anybody noticed.

That is not sentiment and it is not a compliment He paid her. It is an accounting, and the arithmetic behind it runs against nearly everything most people assume about giving, including most of what they have been taught in church.

The measure Jesus actually used

Here is the account, and the line that matters is the reason He gives:

For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living. (Mark 12:44, King James Version)

You are being measured by what it costs the hand and never by what leaves it, and that has never once put you out of the running. Mark 12:44 says she of her want did cast in all that she had, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person with very little read that as an open door rather than a rebuke.

He is not comparing amounts. He is comparing what was left afterward.

The rich gave from surplus, which cost them nothing they would notice by evening. She gave from want, which cost her everything she had that day. By the measure the world uses, they gave more. By the measure Jesus used, she did.

God does not weigh generosity by what leaves your hand. He weighs it by what it cost the hand. That single reversal is why nobody in Scripture is ever too poor to be generous, and why nobody is ever rich enough for it to be automatic, and Mark 12:44 states the measure in the Lord's own mouth while the Holy Spirit applies it to whatever is actually in a person's pocket.

The churches that had to beg for the privilege

Paul writes about a group of congregations that were themselves in trouble, and what he says about them is startling.

How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. (2 Corinthians 8:2)

Deep poverty. Great affliction. And out of that, liberality.

Then the detail that is almost never preached:

Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift, and take upon us the fellowship of the ministering to the saints. (2 Corinthians 8:4)

You are invited into this and not billed for it, and it has never once been a toll on anybody. 2 Corinthians 8:4 has them entreat for the fellowship of the ministering rather than submit to a demand, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes an invitation feel like one.

They begged him to let them give. Paul had evidently tried to spare them, and they would not be spared. They understood giving as a fellowship they were being excluded from, not a bill they were being handed.

And Paul explains why he tells the Corinthians about it, and it is not to shame them into matching it:

I speak not by commandment, but by occasion of the forwardness of others, and to prove the sincerity of your love. (2 Corinthians 8:8)

Not by commandment. He is careful, and any teacher handling this ought to be as careful as he was.

Giving in Scripture is a fellowship you are invited into, never a toll you pay to be heard. And it is His Spirit who makes an invitation feel like an invitation rather than a demand, because a demand has never once produced a cheerful giver.

What it is actually for

Paul states the purpose plainly, and it is not what a lot of teaching implies.

And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)

Read the direction of that sentence. Sufficiency is not the destination. It is the middle of the sentence, and the end of the sentence is every good work. God supplies so that there is enough, so that something can move on through.

You have been supplied for a reason that reaches past your own household, and it has never once stopped at your door. 2 Corinthians 9:8 puts sufficiency in the middle of the sentence and every good work at the end of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person's provision pointed outward.

He says it again two verses later: He that ministereth seed to the sower multiplies your seed sown and increases the fruits of your righteousness, being enriched in every thing to all bountifulness (2 Corinthians 9:10-11). Enriched to bountifulness. The enriching has a destination and the destination is other people.

That is the same architecture as Ephesians 4:28, where the thief works so that he may have to give. It is the same as Deuteronomy 8:18, where the power to get exists so that God may establish His covenant. Scripture is remarkably consistent: what comes to you is moving through you, and generosity is not the loss of provision but its purpose.

Nothing here is a transaction, and Paul does not offer one. He tells them God is able. He does not tell them how much, or when, or in what form, and neither will anybody honest.

The breakthrough

So stop waiting to be in a position to be generous. That position does not arrive, and Scripture never once describes it.

The widow did not wait. The Macedonians did not wait, and they had every reason and every excuse and Paul himself trying to let them off. What you have in your hand right now is the material, and it is enough, because the measure was never the amount. 2 Corinthians 8:2 puts deep poverty and liberality in the same sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that true in a person rather than admirable in a story.

You are already in a position to be generous, and the better position has never once arrived for anybody. 2 Corinthians 8:4 has churches in deep poverty beg for the privilege, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns a person's waiting into a Thursday somebody else remembers.

Hear the guardrail clearly, because this is where teaching about money most often goes wrong. Nothing here promises you a return. God is not a mechanism and giving is not an investment, and the moment somebody tells you that what you give determines what you get, they have stopped describing the God of Scripture. Paul says God is able. He does not say what God will do, and he does not put a figure on it, and neither will I.

What comes to you is moving through you, and God is not asking you to fund Him. He is inviting you into what He is already doing. Christ is in you, and the Spirit who moved poor churches to beg for the privilege is not standing over you with a bill.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over what is in your hands is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. Jesus measured a gift by what it cost the hand, so speak to the belief that you have nothing worth giving: you have standing to address it because He is the one who named two coins the largest gift in the room. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Mark 12:44 and 2 Corinthians 9:8 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not your volume, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Certainty that I have nothing worth giving, you are answered and you are wrong about my hands. The Word of God says she of her want did cast in all that she had, and He called that more than everything the wealthy put in that day.
  2. Tightness I have blamed on my circumstances, you are finished in the name of Jesus. The word in 2 Corinthians 8:2 has deep poverty produce liberality, so I am free and I am openhanded and what comes to me is moving through me.
  3. Father, Your word says You make all grace abound toward me that I may abound to every good work, so You supply in order that something can go through me. I am not funding You. I am joining You, and I thank You for the invitation.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
