Generosity2 Kings 4:10

Let Us Make a Little Chamber on the Wall

This message is for the reader who wants to be generous and genuinely does not know what it would look like for them

A prophet kept walking past the same town, and a woman in that town noticed.

That is where this starts. Not with a need being announced, not with anybody asking. She observed that a man came through Shunem regularly, and she got him to stop and eat, and after a while it became a habit that whenever he passed by he turned in there for a meal.

And then she said something to her husband that is one of the most practical sentences in the Old Testament.

Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. Let us make a little chamber, I pray thee, on the wall; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick: and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.

A bed, a table, a stool, and a candlestick.

She names four objects. Not a spirit of hospitality, not a commitment to be generous. Four items of furniture and a room on the roof.

That is what generosity looks like when somebody has actually thought about it, and it is the exact opposite of how most of us hold the idea.

She noticed before she acted

Read the first move, because it is not the building.

And she said unto her husband, Behold now, I perceive that this is an holy man of God, which passeth by us continually. (2 Kings 4:9, King James Version)

I perceive. Which passeth by us continually.

She had been paying attention over a stretch of time. She noticed a pattern in somebody else's life, and the pattern was ordinary: a man went past regularly and had nowhere in particular to stop.

Nobody told her. He never asked. He was not in crisis and there was no emergency anywhere in this account.

That is the first thing this passage teaches. Most generosity that fits somebody starts with noticing a pattern rather than responding to an announcement.

You are able to see something nobody has said out loud, and generosity has never once needed to wait for a request. That is not me reading extra into a verse. 2 Kings 4:9 has her perceive a routine before anybody asks for anything, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a person alert to what is going on around them.

Four objects, not a feeling

Now the specificity, because it is the whole gift of this passage to somebody who feels vague.

A bed, a table, a stool, a candlestick.

That is a place to sleep, a place to work, a place to sit, and light. Four things, and between them they cover everything a traveling man actually needs in a room, and she thought it through well enough to list them to her husband in one sentence.

She did not say we should be more welcoming. She did not say we should look for opportunities to serve. Those sentences produce nothing and everybody has said them.

She specified furniture.

And that is why the room got built. Vague intentions do not get built, and specific ones do, and the difference between a person who is generous and a person who wants to be is almost always the presence of four named objects instead of a good attitude.

You have something specific available, and a general willingness has never once produced a room. 2 Kings 4:10 lists four items in one sentence, and the Spirit of God is the one who turns a good intention into an actual plan somebody could execute.

It was ordinary and it was on the wall

I want to notice the scale, because this is not a large gift.

It is a little chamber. She says so. A small room built on the wall of the house, which was a normal feature of that kind of building, and four pieces of ordinary furniture.

That is not a fortune. It is a spare room and some basic things, and any household of moderate means could have done it.

What made it remarkable was not the cost. It was that somebody actually did it, and did it before anybody asked, and made it permanent so that a man passing through had a place that was his.

The gift was not the furniture. It was that he stopped having to be a guest.

You are able to give somebody a place rather than an occasion, and the difference has never once been about money. 2 Kings 4:10 has her build a permanent room rather than offer occasional hospitality, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person the difference between a kindness and a standing arrangement.

She wanted nothing

And there is one more thing, and it is the part that keeps this out of every transactional reading.

Later, Elisha wants to do something for her. He asks what can be done, and offers to speak to the king or the captain of the host on her behalf, which is an enormous offer.

And she says: I dwell among mine own people.

That is a refusal, gently made. It means I am fine, I have what I need, I am not looking for anything from this.

She had not built that room to get something. Elisha had to go and find out from his servant what she actually lacked, because she would not tell him.

You are able to give without an angle, and the absence of one has never once made a gift smaller. 2 Kings 4:13 has her decline the offer, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person's generosity free of a calculation.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not stingy, and the reason nothing has happened has never once been that you did not want it to. I am not accusing anybody of vagueness on purpose. 2 Kings 4:10 lists four objects because four objects is what gets a room built, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my point who turns a person's real willingness into something specific enough to do.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. And that verse ends here, in a spare room with four pieces of furniture in it, because the whole point of getting anything on this site is that a person ends up with something that can hold somebody else.

He gives the power. A person builds a house. And then there is a wall to put a little chamber on.

That is the entire economy of everything I write, and it does not run on an amount and it never once required anybody to be wealthy.

You have something that could be made available, and it has never once needed to be large. 2 Kings 4:10 calls it a little chamber, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes an ordinary spare thing into a place somebody stops having to be a guest in.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Vagueness about what I could do, you are not humility and I am done with you. 2 Kings 4:10 lists a bed, a table, a stool and a candlestick by name, so let go of me in the name of Jesus.
  2. Years of meaning to, you have no authority over this week. The word says let us make a little chamber and set for him there, so I stop wanting to be generous in general and by the Holy Spirit I name one person and one object today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and what I got was always meant to hold somebody. Your word says it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither, so I make a place today with what I actually have.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
