ProvisionPsalm 23:2

The Shepherd Leads and That Is the Whole Promise

This message is for the reader who reads the twenty third psalm as a promise of arrival instead of a promise of a guide

The most quoted six verses on the planet get read at funerals, and I think that is part of why we miss what they say.

Everybody knows the opening. The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want. And for most of my life I heard that as a promise about a condition: I will have enough, I will end up somewhere good, I will arrive.

Then somebody made me go through it and mark the verbs.

He maketh me to lie down. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul. He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness. Yea, though I walk through the valley. Thou preparest a table before me.

Almost every one of them is motion. He is leading, and the sheep is walking, and the whole scene is on the move. There is one lying down at the start and one table in the middle, and the rest of it is a road.

That psalm is not a promise that you will get somewhere. It is a promise about who is walking in front of you the whole way.

I shall not want is not I shall not walk

Start with the line everybody knows, because it is doing something more careful than it sounds.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. (Psalm 23:1-2, King James Version)

I shall not want. That is a real promise and I am not going to shrink it. It means there is a shepherd on the job and a sheep with a shepherd is not going to lack what a sheep needs.

But look at what comes immediately after. It is not a description of a warehouse. It is a description of a shepherd taking an animal somewhere. Green pastures are a place he walks them to. Still waters are a place he walks them to. The not wanting happens because of where he is leading, not instead of the walking.

You are not lacking anything under His care, and the care has never once been separate from the walking. That is not me undercutting the verse. Psalm 23:2 has the shepherd leading and the sheep going, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person feel provided for while their own feet are still moving.

Sheep have to follow

Here is the part of the picture that a city kid like me had to have explained.

A shepherd does not carry a flock. He goes ahead of them and they come after him, and if a sheep stops, the shepherd does not haul it to the pasture on his back. The whole arrangement depends on the animal moving in the direction the shepherd went.

That is not a burden placed on the sheep. That is the design. It is the most relaxed arrangement imaginable: the sheep does not have to know where the water is, does not have to plan the route, does not have to carry supplies. It has to do one thing, which is go the way he went.

And I have spent seasons of my life sitting down in the middle of a field waiting to be carried, and calling that trust.

You have been given a road and not a delivery, and He has never once treated that as a lesser gift. Psalm 23:3 says He leads in paths, which is a walking word, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a person willing to move on ground they have not seen the end of.

The valley is in the psalm

I have to say this next part, because a lot of people have been handed this psalm as a promise that nothing bad happens.

Verse four is a valley with a shadow of death in it.

It is right there in the middle of the most comforting passage in Scripture. The shepherd does not route around it. The psalm says I walk through the valley, which means the path went into it, and the promise is not that the valley is avoided, it is that He is in there.

So when somebody is in a hard stretch, this psalm does not indicate they took a wrong turn. It indicates the shepherd's paths sometimes run through low country.

You are not off the path because it got dark, and the shadow has never once meant you were unled. Psalm 23:4 puts a valley inside the promise on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes His presence something a person can actually feel in the low part.

The table is in the middle of it

And then there is the line I love most, and it is a provision line, and it is not what people usually make it.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies.

Not after the enemies are gone. Not in a safe house somewhere later. In front of them. The provision happens in the middle of the situation, not on the far side of it, and that is the most honest picture of God's care in the whole Bible.

That is not a promise that the trouble ends. It is a promise about who sets a table and where.

You have a table set in the middle of an unfinished situation, and He has never once waited for your circumstances to clear. Psalm 23:5 says in the presence of mine enemies, plainly, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person eat in a room that is still hard.

The breakthrough

So let me say what I believe is being spoken over somebody in this.

You are following a shepherd, and He has never once put you on a road He is not on Himself. I am not making the psalm smaller. Psalm 23:1 says the Lord is my shepherd and every verb after it moves, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my reading who takes that from the page into a person who has been sitting down for a long time.

Now hear the balance, because I owe it to you. This is not me saying God will not just do something. He does. He sets tables nobody built and He has done it in my family more than once, and my grandmother could tell you about a week in her life that has no natural explanation and I believe every word of it.

He is not against providing directly. He simply mostly provides by leading, and Deuteronomy 8:18 says the same thing from the other end: He gives the power to get, and getting has feet on it.

You have a step in front of you, and it is enough to be obedience today. Psalm 23:3 has Him leading in paths, and the Spirit of God is the one who moves a person from waiting for a destination into walking a road.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Waiting for arrival, you are not the promise and I am letting you go. Psalm 23:2 says He leadeth me beside the still waters, so get off my feet in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of a road I cannot see the end of, you have no place in this walk. The word puts a valley inside the promise and keeps the shepherd in it, and by the Holy Spirit I am taking the next step today.
  3. Father, You are my shepherd and I shall not want. Your word says You prepare a table in the presence of my enemies, so I eat what You set in the middle of this and I follow where You go.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
