The Brook Dried Up and That Was the Instruction

This message is for the reader whose source of income ended and who has read that ending as God walking away from them

God told a man to go hide by a creek, and He said He had already arranged the food.

So the man went. And every morning and every evening, birds came and brought him bread and meat, and he drank out of that little stream, and this went on long enough to become normal. That is a thing worth sitting with. Miraculous provision becomes routine faster than anybody expects. After the fourth week you stop looking up when the birds come.

He was exactly where God told him to be. He was not in sin. He had not missed anything. He was in the middle of obedience, drinking out of a brook that God Himself had pointed at.

And the brook dried up.

Not because he did something. Because it had not rained, and it had not rained because he himself had announced that it would not rain. The drought he had prophesied came for his own water supply.

Now read what happens next, because it is the whole message.

God does not apologize. God does not explain. God says: arise, get you to a town called Zarephath, I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain you.

The drying up was not the end of the arrangement. It was the alarm clock.

Right where he was told to be

Start with the fact that makes the whole thing hard.

And it came to pass after a while, that the brook dried up, because there had been no rain in the land. (1 Kings 17:7, King James Version)

He did not wander off. He did not disobey. Verse five says he went and did according to the word of the Lord, and he dwelt by the brook, and then verse seven says the brook dried up.

Obedience and the thing running out are in the same paragraph.

That matters enormously for somebody reading this, because a lot of people are carrying a private verdict about themselves. The job ended, the contract stopped, the client left, and somewhere underneath it a sentence formed: I must have gotten something wrong.

You are not out of position because something ended, and the drying up was never a judgment on you. That is not me being nice about a hard month. 1 Kings 17:5 and 17:7 are four sentences apart, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a fact like that and gets it past a person's defenses.

The instruction came after the water was gone

Here is the part that costs, and I am not going to pretend it does not.

God did not tell him about Zarephath while the brook was still running. He told him after. The word came when the water was already gone and there was nothing to drink.

I hate that and I understand it. If Elijah had known about the widow in week two, he would have left the brook in week two, and he would have arrived in that town before God was ready and before she was. The timing of the word had a person on the other end of it.

But from inside the dry creek bed, it does not feel like timing. It feels like silence.

You are not being ignored in the gap, and the quiet has never once meant He stopped talking. The written word puts the next instruction after the brook is empty and not before, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person through the days between one word and the next.

He was sent to a woman with nothing

And look where He sent him. This is the part that undoes every neat idea about how provision works.

He sent a prophet to be fed by a widow in a foreign town during a famine. That is the least resourced person available in the least resourced place at the worst possible time. If somebody were drawing up a plan for keeping a man alive, she is not on the list.

God says: I have commanded a widow woman there to sustain thee.

So the provision came through the poorest person in the story, and it came through her hands, and it came daily, and it never made anybody rich.

You have been looking for provision in the shape you expect, and He has never once been bound to that shape. 1 Kings 17:9 sends a man to a widow in a famine, and the Spirit of God is the one who widens what a person is able to recognize as help.

I want to be careful right here, because this is where somebody could get hurt. I am not telling you that the thing that ended for you had a Zarephath attached to it and that a better thing is coming. I do not know that. Nobody honest does, and any man who tells you he knows is speaking for God without a warrant.

What I am telling you is what the chapter shows about His character, not a forecast about your calendar.

What the dry bed is actually for

There is one more thing here and it is practical.

A brook drying up is information. It is not punishment and it is not abandonment and it is also not nothing. It is a real fact about a real place, and the honest response to it is not to sit by a dry creek insisting that the water is coming back because this is where God put you.

He put him there. Past tense. And then He moved him.

That is the difference between faith and inertia, and it is one of the hardest lines in the Christian life to see clearly, because both of them look like staying put.

You are allowed to read the situation, and God has never once asked you to pretend the water is still running. Scripture has the man arise and go the moment the word comes, and the Holy Spirit is the one who gives a person the clarity to tell an ending from a failure.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being said over somebody today.

You are not abandoned, and the thing that ended was not God removing His hand from you. I am not smoothing this over. 1 Kings 17 has obedience and a dry brook in the same account, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a hopeful attitude who makes that land in a person who is genuinely scared right now.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says He gives the power to get. Notice what that means in a season like this one. The power is still in your hands even when the brook is gone. Skills do not dry up when a stream does. What you know how to do walked out of that building with you.

You have everything He put in you, and no closed door has ever taken one piece of it back. The written word moved a prophet from a creek to a town without stripping him of anything on the way, and the Spirit of God is the one who reminds a person what they are still carrying.

Ask Him for the next place. Plainly. Out loud. That is what Elijah got and it is not too much to ask for.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Dried brook, you are not the end of the story God is telling. 1 Kings 17:7 has the water stop while a man was standing in obedience, so you do not get to name me in the name of Jesus.
  2. Verdict I passed on myself, you have no authority in this house. The word says the word of the Lord came to him after the brook was empty, and by the Holy Spirit I am asking God for the next place out loud today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and no ending has taken it out of my hands. Your word sent a man from a creek to a town and lost nothing on the way, so I get up from this dry bed and I go where You say.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on

1 Kings 17:7
