Provision1 Kings 17:13

She Had Enough for One Meal and She Was Not Wrong About That

This message is for the reader who is waiting for provision to arrive before they will move their own hands

A prophet walked up on a woman at a town gate and asked her for water, and then he asked her for bread.

And she told him the truth. She said: I do not have a loaf. I have a handful of flour in a barrel and a little oil in a jar, and I am picking up these two sticks right now so I can go in and make that into one last meal for me and my son, and then we are going to eat it and die.

Read that again. That is not despair talking. That is arithmetic. She had counted. She knew exactly what was in the house, down to the handful, and she knew exactly how many meals it made, and the number was one.

The prophet did not argue with her math. He did not tell her she was being negative. He did not say she was seeing it wrong.

He said: fear not. Go and do as you have said. And make me a little cake first.

That is one of the hardest sentences in the whole Old Testament, and I have watched people ruin it by making it about giving to a preacher.

He did not correct her arithmetic

Start with what Elijah does not do, because it tells you what kind of God sent him.

And she said, As the LORD thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that I may go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. (1 Kings 17:12, King James Version)

He does not tell her she has more than she thinks. He does not lecture her about a poverty mindset. He does not tell her that her words are creating her reality.

She said a true thing about a real cupboard, and heaven did not flinch.

You are not in trouble with God for knowing exactly how bad it is, and honesty about a number has never once been unbelief. That is not soft handling of Scripture. 1 Kings 17:12 lets a woman say it plainly and the prophet answers with fear not instead of a correction, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person tell God the truth about a bank balance without bracing for a rebuke.

What this story is not

I have to stop the whole message here and say this clearly, because this passage has been used to take money from people who had none.

This is not a giving formula. The prophet is not a fundraiser and the widow is not making an investment. There is no sentence anywhere in this chapter that says give to a man of God and God will multiply what is left. Elijah is not building anything, he is not collecting for a project, and he leaves that town with nothing but what he ate.

I am not going to stand here and attack anybody's teaching about giving either. If God has moved in somebody's life through their giving, I am not going to argue with what they have seen with their own eyes, and I am not going to put a fence around what God is allowed to do.

What I will do is refuse to make this chapter say something it does not say. And what this chapter is actually about is a woman doing the next ordinary thing with her own two hands before anything had changed.

You are not being asked to buy anything, and God has never once put a price on His own kindness toward you. Read 1 Kings 17 for yourself and notice there is no transaction anywhere in it, and let the Holy Spirit strip a passage back to what it actually says.

She was already gathering sticks

Here is the detail I love, and almost nobody preaches it.

When Elijah finds her, she is picking up two sticks. She is not sitting down. She is not waiting. She has already decided what she is doing with the last of it: she is going to cook it, properly, and feed her son a real meal.

That is a woman with nothing, still working. Still gathering. Still using her hands on the last handful she has.

And the miracle lands on a woman who was in motion. It does not land on somebody waiting for a barrel to fill up on its own so they can then start living. She was already in the middle of doing the small honest thing that was in front of her.

You have hands in motion already, and He has not overlooked what those hands are doing. 1 Kings 17:10 finds her gathering sticks before one thing has changed, and the Holy Spirit is the one who honors an ordinary person still moving on their worst week.

The barrel did not announce itself

Now the part that gets me every time.

Watch how the provision actually works after that. It is not a delivery. Nobody shows up with a wagon. There is no windfall, no inheritance, no stranger with a purse.

The barrel just does not run out. Day after day, she goes to the same barrel she already had, in the same house she already lived in, and takes out a handful, and the next day there is a handful. It never got full. There was never a stockpile. There was never a day she could point at and say, look what came.

It was daily, and it was in her own kitchen, and it came through her own hands making bread the way she had always made bread.

You are being provided for in ways that will not look like an arrival, and He has never once been obligated to make it dramatic for you. The written word says the barrel of meal wasted not, and it never once describes a delivery, and the Spirit of God is the one who opens a person's eyes to what has actually been holding them up.

I have to say this too, because my father would want me to and because he is right about it: God does sometimes just provide. Directly. Out of nowhere. I have seen it and I am not going to pretend I have not. He is not limited to hands and work, and a message that hardens into saying He only ever works through effort has quietly denied something true.

He was wrong about waiting. He was never wrong about a God who gives.

The breakthrough

So let me say what I believe is being spoken over somebody right now.

You are not disqualified by an empty cupboard, and the smallness of what is in your hands is not the measure of anything. I am not talking your situation up. 1 Kings 17 has a woman say die out loud and get answered with fear not, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my encouragement that makes a sentence like that land in a person's chest.

Now hear the honest half, because I will not promise you a barrel. I do not know what next month holds for you and no man does. I am not going to tell you a number is coming, and if anybody tells you that, they are speaking for God without being sent.

What I will tell you is what Deuteronomy 8:18 says: He gives the power to get. He puts strength in hands, and He works through the ordinary. That is a promise about Him, not a forecast about your account.

You have something in front of you today, and it does not have to be enough to be obedience. The word records two sticks and a handful of meal and calls that the beginning, and the Spirit of God is the one who meets a person in the small honest thing they do first.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Empty cupboard, you are not the whole account of my life. 1 Kings 17:12 let a woman say what was in the house out loud and heaven answered fear not, so you do not get the last word in the name of Jesus.
  2. Panic about provision, you have no seat at my table. The word says the barrel of meal wasted not and it never once describes a delivery, and by the Holy Spirit I am doing the ordinary thing in front of me today.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You are not stingy and You are not late. Your word met a woman gathering two sticks, so I start with what is in my hands and I trust You with what is not.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
