Jonathan Stood Between His Father and the Truth

This message is for the reader caught between a parent they love and something they know is right

There is a dinner in the Bible that a lot of people have sat through without knowing it was in there.

A king is at the table for a feast, and there is an empty seat, and the empty seat belongs to a man he wants dead. And on the second day he finally asks about it, and his son gives him a covering answer.

And the king comes apart. He says things to his own son at that table that no father should say to a son, and he tells him plainly that as long as that other man is alive, Jonathan will never be established.

And then Jonathan asks a question. One question.

Wherefore shall he be slain? What hath he done?

That is not a speech. He does not present a case. He does not defend David's record or list his service or argue politics. He asks his father what the man actually did, which is the one question that had no answer, and that is exactly why it was unbearable.

And his father threw a spear at him.

At his own son. At a table. In front of people.

And Jonathan got up and left, and the text says he was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

He asked instead of arguing

Read what he actually said, because the form of it is the lesson.

And Jonathan answered Saul his father, and said unto him, Wherefore shall he be slain? what hath he done? (1 Samuel 20:32, King James Version)

Wherefore shall he be slain? What hath he done?

Two questions and not one accusation. He does not tell his father he is wrong, he does not diagnose him, and he does not say anything about the state of Saul's heart, which by that point he understood better than anybody.

He asked for the reason.

And a question is a very different thing to bring to a table than a verdict. A verdict makes the other person defend themselves. A question makes them look at the thing. Jonathan was not trying to win, he was trying to put the actual matter in the middle of the table where his father would have to see it.

You are able to ask instead of accuse, and that has never once been a weaker way to tell the truth. That is not me making a hard scene polite. 1 Samuel 20:32 is a question and not a case, and it is the Holy Spirit who gives a person the exact form of words for a table they cannot afford to blow up.

He did not stop being a son

Here is the part that makes Jonathan one of the most remarkable people in Scripture.

He never left. He stayed in that house. He kept the name, kept the position, kept eating at that table, and when the war came at the end he died on the same field as his father, fighting for the same kingdom.

He never once organized against him. He never took a faction. He knew David would be king and he had made peace with that, and he still spent his life at his father's side.

That is honor without agreement, held for years, at real cost. He did not solve it. He carried it.

You are able to honor somebody you disagree with, and that has never once required you to pretend they are right. 1 Samuel 20 has Jonathan defend David and stay Saul's son in the same chapter, and the Spirit of God is the one who holds a person in a place that has no clean resolution.

The spear was not the worst part

Somebody reading this has had something thrown at them, and I do not want to skip past that.

But look at what the text says grieved him. It does not say he was afraid, and it does not say he was angry about the spear.

He was grieved for David, because his father had done him shame.

He was not thinking about himself. He had just been assaulted by his own father in public and what he carried out of that room was grief for somebody else and shame on behalf of his father.

That is what it actually costs to stand in the middle. It is not the confrontation. It is the grief afterward, and the specific ache of having watched somebody you love be smaller than you needed them to be.

You are carrying grief and not rebellion, and God has never once mistaken one for the other. 1 Samuel 20:34 names the grief specifically, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person mourn a parent who is still alive.

Saul was not a monster

I have to say this, because it is the rule on this site and because it is true in that chapter.

Saul is not a cartoon. He had been chosen by God, anointed by a prophet, and he had genuinely delivered his nation more than once. There is real love in him for Jonathan even in that scene, twisted as it is: the whole reason he is raging is that he thinks he is protecting his son's future.

He is wrong. He is dangerously wrong and people died because of it. And he is not a villain who woke up one day and decided to be one, and the reason his story is so heavy is that a good man went that way over years.

Anybody with a difficult father knows both of those at once, and any message that flattens the parent into a fool has stopped being useful to the person who has to go home for the holidays.

You are allowed to hold both, and loving somebody accurately has never once meant excusing them. 1 Samuel 20:33 shows a father protecting his son's throne while throwing a spear at him, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person see a parent whole.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not dishonoring anybody by telling the truth, and honor has never once been the same thing as silence. I am not handing anybody a weapon. 1 Samuel 20:32 is a question asked in love that cost the man who asked it, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my point who gives somebody the words for a table they love.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. That includes the power to say a hard sentence well. Getting is not only about work and money on this site; some of what a person has to go and get is the ability to stay in a room and tell the truth without setting it on fire.

And I will say the thing I always say. My father and I do not agree, and he is sincere, and he taught me to pray, and he has never come around, and I am still his son. That is not a failure of the argument. That is the argument, and it is the only honest place to stand in it.

You have a Father who is not asking you to choose between honesty and love, and He has never once put those two against each other. Ephesians 4:15 says speaking the truth in love, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies both halves at the same table.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Fear of the room going quiet, you are not honor and I am setting you down. 1 Samuel 20:32 has a son ask wherefore shall he be slain in front of his own father, so let go of my mouth in the name of Jesus.
  2. Pressure to pick a side, you have no authority in this family. The word has Jonathan defend David and stay Saul's son in one chapter, and by the Holy Spirit I am telling the truth and staying at the table.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and some of it is the strength to say a hard thing well. Your word says speaking the truth in love, so I take both halves of that today and I go home and stay a son.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
