Samuel Feared to Show Eli the Vision

This message is for the reader who has to say a hard true thing to somebody they love and respect

A boy heard from God for the first time in his life, and the message was about the old man asleep in the next room.

That is the part of this story nobody prepares you for. Everybody knows the beautiful half. Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth. A child in the temple, a voice in the night, the beginning of a prophet.

Almost nobody talks about what the voice actually said, which was that judgment was coming on the house of the man who had raised him.

Eli was not a stranger. He was the priest who had taken Samuel in as a small child. He was the one who figured out that the voice was God and told the boy what to say. That kind old man in the middle of the night is the reason Samuel answered at all.

And then the message came, and it was about him.

And the next verse is the most human line in that chapter. Samuel lay until the morning.

He did not sleep. He lay there until it got light, and then he got up and opened the doors of the house of the Lord like it was any other morning, and the text says he feared to show Eli the vision.

He was afraid and he was not wrong to be

Read what the text says about the boy, because there is no rebuke anywhere in it.

And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. (1 Samuel 3:15, King James Version)

Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision.

Scripture states it plainly, without judgment. He was afraid. He is not criticized for the fear and nobody says he should have marched in there at three in the morning full of confidence.

He got up and did his job first. He opened the doors. There is something ordinary and steadying about that detail: a person with a hard thing ahead of them still went and did the normal first task of the day.

You are allowed to be afraid of this conversation, and the fear has never once meant you should not have it. That is not me lowering the standard. 1 Samuel 3:15 names the fear without correcting it, and it is the Holy Spirit who stays with a person through a night before a hard morning.

The old man made it easy

Now the part that is easy to miss, and it belongs to Eli.

Eli calls him. Samuel does not have to start the conversation. And when Samuel says here am I, Eli asks him directly what the Lord said, and then he says: I pray thee hide it not from me.

The man who was about to receive the worst news of his life told the boy not to soften it.

That is one of the most honorable things anybody does in that book, and Eli is not written as a hero anywhere else. He failed with his sons, badly, and the message coming was about exactly that failure. And in that one moment he made it possible for a frightened boy to tell him the truth.

You have somebody on the other side of this who may be readier than the version in your head, and that room has never once been guaranteed to fight you. 1 Samuel 3:17 has Eli ask for the whole thing before the boy says a word, and the Spirit of God is the one who prepares a room before somebody walks into it.

You are not walking in alone, and He has never once sent anybody into a hard conversation by themselves. 1 Samuel 3:19 says the Lord was with him and did let none of his words fall to the ground, and the Holy Spirit is the one who goes into that room ahead of a person.

He told him every whit

Then comes the sentence that settles what Samuel did.

And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him.

Every whit. All of it. He did not edit it down to the parts that would land softer, and he did not add anything to it either.

That is the standard, and it is hard in both directions. Most people who finally say a hard thing either shave it down until it does not land, or they let two years of stored frustration come out attached to it and say a great deal more than was actually given to them to say.

Samuel had a message. He delivered the message. He did not add his own opinion about Eli's parenting and he did not soften what he had been given.

You have one thing to say and not a case to make, and the extra has never once helped anybody hear the first part. 1 Samuel 3:18 says he told him every whit and hid nothing, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person's hard sentence clean of everything that does not belong in it.

And Eli said, It is the LORD

The response is four words and it is the whole reason I love this chapter.

It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.

That is not a man arguing. It is not a man collapsing either. It is an old priest receiving a devastating word from a child and recognizing where it came from.

And I have to be honest about what follows, because Scripture is. Eli does not fix it. He does not go and restrain his sons, and the judgment comes exactly as it was said. Receiving a word well is not the same as acting on it, and this chapter contains both a beautiful response and an unchanged life.

That is worth knowing for anybody about to have this conversation. A person can take it well and still not move, and that is not a failure of how you said it.

You are responsible for saying it and not for what they do with it, and that has never once been on you. 1 Samuel 3:18 has Eli respond well and 1 Samuel 4 has nothing change, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes the outcome off a person's shoulders.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not dishonoring them by saying it, and honor has never once required somebody to stay silent about the truth. I am not handing anybody a license. 1 Samuel 3:18 says he told him every whit and hid nothing, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my encouragement who gives somebody the exact words and keeps everything else out of them.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. I keep saying that some of what a person has to go and get is not money or skill. It is the ability to sit across from somebody they love and say a true sentence without contempt in it, and that capacity is built the same way every other one is: badly at first, over time, with the Spirit supplying what a person does not have.

And where I stand has not changed. There are things I have said to my father and things I still owe him, and I have gotten some of them wrong, and he is still the man who taught me to pray.

You have a sentence and a day to say it, and the dread has never once been an accurate forecast. 1 Samuel 3:17 has the older man ask for all of it, and the Spirit of God is the one who prepares a room and a mouth at the same time.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Dread of this conversation, you are not wisdom and you are not deciding this. 1 Samuel 3:15 says Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision and he showed him anyway, so let go in the name of Jesus.
  2. Everything I want to add to it, you have no place in that room. The word says he told him every whit and hid nothing, and by the Holy Spirit I am saying the one true thing and nothing else.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and some of that power is a clean mouth in a hard room. Your word has an old man say it is the Lord, so I say my sentence today and I leave the response to You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
