Heal Her Now, O God, I Beseech Thee

Moses got talked about by his own brother and sister, and the thing they said out loud was not the thing they were actually upset about.

They started with his wife. Miriam and Aaron spoke against him because of the woman he had married. And then, one verse later, the real thing comes out.

Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? Hath he not spoken also by us?

There it is. It was never about his marriage. It was about standing. They were leaders too, and they had been beside him the whole way, and something in them had gotten tired of being second.

And the text does something remarkable in the middle of this. It stops the narrative to say: now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.

That line is dropped right there, between the accusation and God's response, and it is telling you why what happens next happens the way it does.

Because God comes down. He calls all three of them out, He defends Moses to their faces, and when the cloud lifts, Miriam is leprous.

And Aaron turns to his brother and begs him.

And Moses prays seven words.

Heal her now, O God, I beseech thee.

He did not defend himself

Read what the text says about him, because the placement of that sentence is the whole point.

Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. (Numbers 12:3, King James Version)

Very meek.

That word does not mean weak and it does not mean timid. It means power under restraint. It is the word used for a strong animal that has been trained, and it describes somebody who has the capacity to act and does not.

And notice where it sits. Right after the accusation and before God's answer. The reason it is there is that Moses said nothing. He did not defend himself, he did not argue standing with his siblings, and he did not go around the camp making his case.

God defended him instead, and He did it because Moses had not.

You are not required to defend yourself, and silence has never once meant a thing goes unanswered. That is not me recommending passivity. Numbers 12:3 places that sentence between the charge and God's response on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds a person still when they have every argument ready to go.

The hardest thing is what comes after

Here is the part that this whole message is actually about.

Being vindicated is not the test. Anybody can enjoy that. God came down out of a cloud and said, in front of both of them, that He spoke to Moses face to face and not in dark speeches. That is about as complete a vindication as anybody in Scripture ever received.

The test comes about ninety seconds later, when the consequence lands on his sister and she is standing there with a skin disease in front of the whole camp.

And in that moment Moses had a full and legitimate right to say nothing. She had earned it. Everybody watching would have understood.

He prayed for her immediately. Seven words, no conditions, no lecture attached, no I told you so, no requirement that she apologize first.

You are going to be handed a moment like that, and what you do with it has never once been determined by whether you were right. Numbers 12:13 has him pray the instant it lands, and the Spirit of God is the one who produces that response in somebody who has every reason for a different one.

Aaron asked him for it

And do not miss Aaron in this, because he says something a lot of people cannot say.

He turns to Moses and says: alas, my lord, I beseech thee, lay not the sin upon us, wherein we have done foolishly, and wherein we have sinned.

He owns it. Immediately, completely, out loud. We have done foolishly and we have sinned. He does not explain, he does not qualify it, and he does not spread the responsibility around.

That is a rare thing in a family, and it is worth saying that it happened, because a lot of people reading this will never get that sentence from anybody. Aaron gave it, and it came fast, and it came without conditions.

Some families produce that and some do not, and Moses did not wait to find out which kind his was before he prayed.

You are able to pray before an apology arrives, and it has never once been required to come first. Numbers 12:11-13 has the confession and the prayer in adjacent verses, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the willingness to move first.

The consequence still ran

I have to say this honestly, because it would be easy to end on the prayer.

She was still shut out of the camp for seven days. Moses prayed and God answered, and the answer included a real consequence that ran its full course, and the whole nation waited a week and did not travel until she came back.

So the prayer did not erase anything. It did not have to.

What it did was make sure that the man who had been wronged was not the one adding to the weight. The consequence was God's business, it ran on its own, and Moses was nowhere near it.

That is a good place for a person to be standing when something lands on somebody who wronged them.

You are not the one carrying the consequence, and it has never once needed your help. Numbers 12:15 has the camp wait seven days while God's answer runs its course, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person out of a job that was never theirs.
