Thirty Eight Years and an Explanation Ready

There was a man lying by a pool who had been there longer than most people live in one house.

Thirty eight years. And around that pool was a crowd of people waiting for the water to move, because there was a belief that when it stirred, the first one in got well. So there was an entire population of people who had organized their lives around being close to the edge.

Jesus walks through, and out of all of them, He goes to this one man, and He asks him a question.

Wilt thou be made whole?

Now on the surface that is almost rude. The man is lying there. It is obvious what is wrong. And of course he wants to be well, or he would not have spent thirty eight years next to a pool.

But look at what the man says back, because he does not answer the question.

He says: Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool; but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me.

That is not a yes. That is an explanation, and it is a good one, and it is entirely accurate.

And I think he had been saying it for a very long time.

The explanation was true

Read what he says, and notice that Jesus does not argue with a word of it.

The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. (John 5:7, King James Version)

I have no man. Another steppeth down before me.

Both of those are facts. He genuinely had nobody. Somebody genuinely did get there first, every single time, for decades. There is not one false statement in his answer, and Jesus never once tells him he is making excuses.

That matters, because most explanations that hold people in place are accurate. That is exactly what makes them so strong. An excuse that was false would have fallen apart years ago. The ones that last thirty eight years last because they are true.

You are not lying about your situation, and He has never once treated a real obstacle as a character flaw. That is not me lowering the bar. John 5:7 lets an accurate explanation stand without correction, and it is the Holy Spirit who separates a true description from the place a person has decided to live inside it.

The question underneath

So why did Jesus ask it at all.

I think because after enough years, wanting a thing and having an account of why it has not happened become two separate items, and a person can have the second one long after the first one quietly went dormant.

That is not a moral failure. It is a mercy the mind performs. Hoping for thirty eight years is unbearable, so something in a person turns the hope down to a level they can survive, and what is left running is the explanation.

And the explanation is easier to say out loud, because it never disappoints anybody.

So when Jesus asks wilt thou be made whole, He is not questioning the man's honesty. He is reaching underneath the account for something that has not been spoken to in decades.

You are being asked about the thing itself, and He has never once been satisfied to talk only about the obstacles. John 5:6 has Jesus ask about the want rather than the circumstance, and the Spirit of God is the one who reaches something in a person that has gone quiet.

He did not fix the pool

Here is the part I find remarkable and it is easy to miss.

The man's whole framework was about the water. He needed somebody to carry him in. That was the mechanism he had believed in for thirty eight years, and everybody around that pool believed it too.

Jesus does not engage with the pool at all. He does not say I will carry you. He does not wait for the water to stir. He does not fix the man's access problem.

He says: rise, take up thy bed, and walk.

The whole system the man had been waiting inside of turned out to be irrelevant to what actually happened, and that had to be disorienting. The thing he was waiting for was not the thing that came.

You have been waiting for a specific mechanism, and He has never once been limited to the one you were watching for. John 5:8 bypasses the pool entirely, and the Holy Spirit is the one who does something a person was not looking in the direction of.

And he did not know who it was

There is a detail at the end that stops this from being a neat story.

Afterward, people ask the man who told him to carry his bed, and the text says he did not know. He had no idea who had healed him, because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd.

So a man got up after thirty eight years and could not name the person responsible.

That is worth holding onto. He did not have a moment of great faith. He did not confess anything, he did not ask, he did not even get a name. He answered a question with an explanation and then got up when he was told to.

Which means whatever happened at that pool, it was not something he generated.

You are not being asked to produce this, and it has never once run on the strength of anybody's belief. John 5:13 says he that was healed wist not who it was, and the Spirit of God is the one who does what no amount of a person's own conviction could.
