The People Had a Mind to Work and Somebody Had to Ask Them

The wall around that city had been down for well over a hundred years.

Not damaged. Down. Burned gates, stone in heaps, the whole perimeter open, and generations of people living inside it who had never once seen it standing. That is not a repair job anymore. That is a fact of life. That is just how the city is.

And it went back up in fifty two days.

Fifty two. After a hundred and forty something years of nothing. And the thing that changed was not new money and it was not new stone and it was not better weather.

What changed is that a man showed up, looked at the whole thing, and then cut it into pieces and handed the pieces out. He gave the priests the sheep gate. He gave a goldsmith a section. He gave a perfume maker a section. He gave families the part of the wall that ran past their own front door and told them to build there.

And the sentence the Bible uses for what happened next is one of my favorite lines in the whole Old Testament.

For the people had a mind to work.

They had it the whole time. Nobody had asked them.

The line that tells you the problem was never willingness

Here it is, and it is short.

So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. (Nehemiah 4:6, King James Version)

The people had a mind to work.

Sit with that for a second, because it means something uncomfortable. That desire did not appear in fifty two days. Those same people, with those same hands and that same willingness, had been walking past that rubble their entire lives.

The bottleneck was never the people. The bottleneck was that nobody had ever handed them a section and said, this piece is yours.

You are surrounded by people who have a mind to work, and you have been reading their silence as refusal. That is not optimism I am selling you. Nehemiah 4 says it plainly about a whole city, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a tired person see the room they are actually standing in.

Over against his own house

Now look at how he divided it, because this is the part that shows the man was smart as well as brave.

Chapter three of that book is a long list, and most people skip it, and it is one of the most practical chapters in Scripture. Over and over you get the same phrase: every one over against his house. Repaired the piece in front of where he lived. Next man, next section, next family.

He did not put a committee on it. He did not ask for volunteers in general. He gave named people a specific, small, visible piece, and the piece was the one they cared about most, because their own door was behind it.

That is why it moved. A person will show up for a section they can see the end of, next to their own life, with their name on it.

You have been asking people for vague help, and God has never once run His work that way. Read the list in Nehemiah 3 and count how many times a specific name is attached to a specific stretch of wall, and let the Holy Spirit show you how to cut your own thing into pieces small enough for somebody to say yes to.

What I got wrong for years

I did everything myself for a long time and I called it a lot of things. Independent. Focused. Not wanting to be a burden.

None of those were the real word. The real word was pride, and it was the humble looking kind, which is the worst kind because you can carry it into church and nobody sees it.

Here is how I know. When I finally asked somebody for help with something, my first feeling was not relief. It was embarrassment. And embarrassment at being helped is not humility. Humility does not mind being helped. Pride is the thing that minds.

I got that honest with myself sitting in a truck cab, and I got it honest because of a man who did not lecture me. He asked me one question: who is on your wall with you. And I could not name anybody, and I had six people in my phone who would have come.

You are not weak for needing hands, and asking has never once cost you anything with God. The word puts a whole city on a wall together and calls that the reason it went up, and the Spirit of God is the one who gets a proud, tired person to open their mouth.

They built with one hand and held a weapon in the other

I have to include this part because it is where the story stops being tidy.

That work was opposed. Loudly. Men came to mock them, then to threaten them, and Nehemiah put half the crew on guard and had the other half build, and the builders themselves worked with one hand and carried a weapon with the other. Everybody kept their clothes on at night. Nobody went home.

So this is not a story about how things get easy when everybody helps. It got harder. It got harder and it also got done, and both of those are in the same chapter.

You are being held up while you build, and the weight in your other hand is not a sign you were left to it. Nehemiah 4:9 has them praying and setting a watch in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries a person through the stretch where both hands are full.

You have opposition and a finished wall in the same chapter, and the first one is not a ruling on the second. Nehemiah 4 has the mockery and the finished wall in the same account, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person building with one hand when they would rather put both hands down.
