The Blade, Then the Ear, Then the Full Corn

This message is for the reader who cannot see any progress in what they are building and has concluded there is none

Jesus tells a short parable that almost nobody preaches, and it is about a man who does almost nothing.

He scatters seed on the ground, and then he goes to bed, and gets up, and goes to bed, and gets up. Night and day. And the seed springs and grows up, and the man does not know how.

That last part is the line. He knoweth not how.

And then Jesus describes the growth in three stages, in order, and the order is the whole gift of the parable: first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear.

Three stages. Not one event.

And the reason that matters is that two of those three stages look like nothing much. A blade is a thin green line coming out of dirt and it does not look like bread. The ear is a shape with nothing in it yet. Only the third one looks like what everybody was working toward, and the first two are the majority of the time.

So most of the life of anything worth having is spent in a stage that does not look like the thing.

He does not know how it works

Read the parable, and notice what the man is not doing.

And should sleep, and rise night and day, and the seed should spring and grow up, he knoweth not how. For the earth bringeth forth fruit of herself; first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn in the ear. (Mark 4:27-28, King James Version)

He knoweth not how. The earth bringeth forth fruit of herself.

The man's job was to put seed in the ground and then to live his ordinary life. The growing was not his department and he could not have made it go faster by understanding it better.

That is a strange comfort and it is a real one. There is a part of any built thing that a person is not running, and the fact that somebody cannot see the mechanism does not mean the mechanism has stopped.

You are not required to understand it for it to be working, and He has never once made your comprehension a condition of the growth. That is not me excusing passivity. Mark 4:27 puts the growing outside the man's knowledge on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit who does the part nobody can see or manage.

The blade is not a failed ear

Here is where this parable is practical, and it is about misdiagnosis.

A blade is not a failed ear. It is a blade, and a blade is exactly what is supposed to be there at that stage, and a person standing over it demanding to see grain is not being diligent, they are misreading a calendar.

But that is precisely what most discouragement is. It is not looking at nothing. It is looking at a real, correct, on schedule blade and judging it against the picture of the full corn.

And the judgment produces the worst possible response, which is pulling it up to check.

You are looking at the right thing at the right stage, and the emptiness you see has never once been the whole account. Mark 4:28 names three stages in order, and the Spirit of God is the one who lets a person recognize which one they are actually standing in.

The middle stage is the hardest

Of the three, the ear is the one that ends people.

The blade is exciting, because it is proof that something happened. Something came up. That is a good week.

The full corn is obvious and everybody can see it.

The ear is a shape with no substance in it yet. It looks like the finished thing from a distance and it is empty up close, and it can sit there for a long time in a way that a person cannot distinguish from being stuck.

That is where most things get abandoned. Not at the beginning, where it is new, and not at the end, where it is obviously working. In the middle, where it has a shape and no weight.

You are in a stage that has a name, and the emptiness of it has never once meant it stopped. Mark 4:28 puts the ear between the blade and the full corn as a normal stage and not a problem, and the Holy Spirit is the one who steadies a person through the part that looks like a stall.

What the man does do

I want to be clear about what the parable is not saying, because a passive reading of it would be a disaster on this site.

He scattered seed. That is not nothing, that is the whole beginning, and no growth happens on ground where nobody put anything.

And at the end, when the fruit is ready, the text says immediately he puts in the sickle, because the harvest is come. He acts at the front and he acts at the end. What he does not do is stand over the field in the middle trying to make it hurry.

So this is not a parable about doing nothing. It is a parable about which parts belong to a person and which parts do not, and it puts the middle firmly outside anybody's control.

You have a part in this, and He has never once asked you to do the part that was His. Mark 4:29 has the man put in the sickle himself when the time comes, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes a person able to work their own part without gripping the rest.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are in the middle of something real, and the flatness of this month has never once been evidence that it stopped. I am not manufacturing hope. Mark 4:28 lists three stages and two of them look like almost nothing, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my picture who gets that all the way into a person who is genuinely discouraged this week.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. This parable is the timeline of that verse. He gives the power, the person scatters the seed, and then there is a long stretch of ordinary living during which the actual growing is not being run by the person at all.

He was bad at it first. Everybody is. That is not a stage to get past, it is the blade, and the blade is not a failure. It is exactly what is supposed to be in the ground right now.

You have today's ordinary piece of it, and that has never once been too small to count. Mark 4:27 has a man sleep and rise night and day while the thing grows, and the Spirit of God is the one who is doing what nobody can see between one week and the next.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Impatience with the blade, you are not discernment and I am done listening to you. Mark 4:28 says first the blade, then the ear, after that the full corn, so let go of my hands in the name of Jesus.
  2. Verdict I passed on this month, you have no authority over what is growing. The word says he knoweth not how and the earth brings forth of herself, so I stop concluding there is no progress and by the Holy Spirit I do today's piece of it.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and the growing has never once been my department. Your word says the seed springs and grows up while a man sleeps and rises, so I scatter what I have today and I leave the rest with You.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
