Seven Years Seemed Unto Him but a Few Days

This message is for the reader who is counting the cost of a long apprenticeship and wondering whether it is worth the years

There is a sentence about Jacob that people quote at weddings and it is stranger than they realize.

And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her.

Seven years. Working for another man, on another man's land, under another man's terms, and the writer says it went by like a few days.

Now that is not because the work was light. This was livestock in open country and it was hard and it was daily and it did not take breaks. Later in that same story he describes what those years were actually like: the drought consumed him by day and the frost by night, and sleep departed from his eyes.

So he was not floating. He was exhausted, and the years still went fast.

That is worth understanding, because most people trying to do something long are trying to do it on discipline, and discipline is a fine thing that runs out. What made those seven years survivable for him was not that he was tougher than everybody. It was that he wanted something specific badly enough that the years stopped being the point.

The years did not shrink, his attention moved

Read it carefully, because the mechanism is in the last clause.

And Jacob served seven years for Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. (Genesis 29:20, King James Version)

For the love he had to her.

Nothing about the seven years changed. Every day of it happened at full length. What was different is what he had his eyes on, and the thing he had his eyes on was specific, personal, and worth it to him.

That is not a trick and it does not work with a vague goal. Nobody grinds out seven years for a general sense that things should be better. It works when the thing wanted has a face on it, a name, a number, an address.

You are able to carry a long stretch, and God has never once asked you to do it on willpower. That is not a motivational claim. Genesis 29:20 names love as the reason the years went fast, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts a real and specific desire in a person rather than a general restlessness.

And then he got handed the wrong outcome

Here is where the story stops being inspirational and starts being useful.

At the end of the seven years he was deceived. He did the work, he fulfilled the terms, and the man he worked for gave him the wrong daughter, and Jacob found out in the morning.

Seven years, completed, and the outcome was not the one he had worked for.

And what he did next is the whole reason this passage is in a category about diligence. He negotiated, and then he worked another seven years.

That second seven is a different animal from the first. The first seven had anticipation in it. The second seven were worked by a man who now knew exactly what it felt like to finish and be cheated, and he did them anyway.

You are able to keep going after something did not pay out, and one broken outcome has never once ended a person's capacity to work. Genesis 29:30 has him serve seven more years, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies whatever a person uses to start a second stretch after the first one went wrong.

What long stretches actually cost

I want to be honest about the price, because Scripture is.

Twenty years into working for that man, Jacob finally says out loud what it had been like. He says the drought was on him in the day and the frost at night, that sleep left his eyes, that his wages had been changed ten times.

That is what a long apprenticeship sounds like from the inside when somebody finally stops being polite about it.

So this is not a message about how the years fly by if your heart is in the right place. The years are heavy. The verse about a few days is one sentence in a story that also contains twenty years of frost.

Both of those are true about the same stretch, and anybody in a long thing knows that already.

You are not failing because it feels long, and the lightness in Genesis 29:20 has never once been the whole account. Genesis 31:40 puts the frost and the lost sleep on the record too, and the Holy Spirit is the one who stays with a person through the part that does not feel like a few days.

Seven years is not the unit

Here is the practical thing, and it is the only advice in this message.

Nobody works seven years. That is not a real unit of effort and nobody has ever done one. What a person actually does is a week, and then another week, and the seven years is an accounting term applied afterward.

Jacob did not wake up and carry seven years. He carried a Tuesday with sheep on it, about two thousand five hundred times.

The number that frightens a person is almost always a number nobody has to lift. The unit that has to be lifted is much smaller and much more ordinary, and it is the only one that has ever been available to anybody.

You have a week in front of you, and the whole stretch has never once been the thing you were asked to pick up. Genesis 29:20 counts seven years from the far end after they were already spent, and the Spirit of God is the one who supplies grace on the specific day a person is standing in.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are not too late, and the number in front of you has never once been the thing you had to carry. I am not making a long road sound short. Genesis 31:40 has the frost and the lost sleep in it and I have not hidden them, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my framing who gets a person to start something that will take years.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. That is a sentence about capacity and capacity is spent over time, which means a long stretch is not evidence that something is wrong. It is the ordinary shape of anything worth having, and Scripture keeps showing it: forty years with sheep, fourteen years for a family, three years with the disciples, a lifetime on an ark.

Nobody in that book got a shortcut. Not one.

You have this week, and He has never once given anybody more than that at a time. Genesis 29:20 puts love at the center of what made a long service bearable, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps something specific and worth it in front of a person's eyes.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Weight of the years ahead, you are not too heavy and I am not carrying you all at once. Genesis 29:20 counted seven years only after they were spent, so get off my back in the name of Jesus.
  2. Fear of how long this apprenticeship runs, you have no vote in this decision. The word says they seemed unto him but a few days for the love he had, and by the Holy Spirit I am starting the next week of it.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and You spend it a week at a time. Your word has a man serve seven years and then seven more, so I take this week and I put it in Your hands.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
