Paul Made Tents and Nobody Called It a Fallback

This message is for the reader who is quietly ashamed of the job that is paying for the thing they were actually made to do

A man came into a new city with no money and no contacts and one skill in his hands.

He was not young. He had already been through more than most people survive. He had been beaten with rods, run out of towns, left for dead once outside a city he had walked into preaching. And now he shows up in a port town full of sailors and merchants and he needs a place to sleep and something to eat.

So he goes and finds a couple who do the same trade he does, and he moves in with them, and he goes to work.

Not part time. Not on the side. He worked with them, the text says, because he was of the same craft. Goat hair, canvas, leather, a curved needle, and hands that got hard the way hands get hard. He sat in that shop and cut and stitched, six days a week, and on the seventh he went to the meeting house and argued with everybody in it about a man who had come back from the dead.

That man wrote more of the New Testament than anybody except Luke.

And when Luke writes down what he did for a living, there is no apology in the sentence. No "he had to". No "sadly". No "in the meantime". Just: he was a tentmaker, and he worked.

The sentence with no apology in it

Here it is. Read what is and is not in it.

And because he was of the same craft, he abode with them, and wrought: for by their occupation they were tentmakers. (Acts 18:3, King James Version)

He abode with them, and wrought. He stayed, and he worked. That is the entire report, and there is not a syllable of embarrassment anywhere in it.

Now I want you to notice something, because this is where it gets personal for a lot of people. Luke could have skipped this. He is writing an account of how the gospel got out of one country and into the whole world. He has shipwrecks to cover. He has a riot in Ephesus coming. And he stops to tell you what the man did with his hands on a Tuesday.

You are not a lesser thing because of what you do to pay for your life, and the work in your hands is not a footnote God is waiting to get past. That is not a kind opinion about your situation. It is what Scripture chose to write down and keep, and it is the Holy Spirit who put that ordinary sentence in a book about the end of the world.

I know why that lands hard. Somewhere along the way a lot of us learned to add a sentence to the end of our job.

The extra sentence

Watch a person say what they do sometime. Really watch.

They say the job, and then they add something. "For now." "Until I finish school." "It is just temporary." "It is not what I want to be doing." That extra sentence is not information. It is a receipt. It is a person proving to a stranger that they know they are worth more than the thing they just named.

I did it for years. Somebody at church would ask, and I would say I move boxes, and then I would hear myself say, but I write. Every time. Like the boxes needed a lawyer.

Here is what I could not see. The boxes were not the obstacle to the writing. The boxes were paying for the writing. I was standing on a floor and apologizing for the floor.

You have been carrying an apology that God never once asked you for. Go and read the word for yourself: it names a man's trade in the same breath as his ministry and it does not rank them, and the Spirit of God is the One who can take that weight off a person's chest before they get to work in the morning.

And I am not saying reach lower. Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get, and getting is a real word. Go get the thing. Go take the class, learn the trade, build the second business. But you do not have to hate the job that is funding the years while you learn.

What the shop actually bought him

Here is the part almost nobody preaches, and it is the strongest argument in the chapter.

Paul later tells the Ephesian elders exactly why he worked. He says it out loud, and he holds his hands up while he says it.

Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me. (Acts 20:34, King James Version)

These hands. Not only mine. And to them that were with me. The tent shop was not just keeping Paul fed. It was feeding a traveling team. The needle paid for other people.

So the work was not a delay in the ministry. The work was a department of it.

You have been treating your paycheck as the opposite of your calling, and it has been paying its rent the whole time. Acts 20:34 puts a man's working hands in the middle of a farewell to pastors, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person stop splitting their own life in two.

That changes what a shift is. If your hours are keeping a household standing, keeping a kid in shoes, keeping somebody's medicine paid for, then the question of whether it counts was settled a long time ago.

You have been running a ministry with no sign on it, and heaven has been reading it correctly the whole time. Acts 20:34 keeps a working man's hands in the record on purpose, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a person finally see their own week the way God has been seeing it.

The breakthrough

So let me put down what I believe God is saying over somebody reading this.

You are not behind, and the job you have been apologizing for is not the evidence against you. I am not softening anything. The written word puts a needle in an apostle's hand and never blinks, and it is the Spirit of God and not a pep talk that makes that land in the chest instead of the head.

Hear the difference, because it matters. I am not telling you that job is your ceiling and I am not telling you to be satisfied. God gives the power to get, which means the getting is real and the reaching is allowed. What I am telling you is that the years between here and there are not dead years, and the hands doing the funding are not lesser hands.

You have His attention while you are dressed for work, and the apology has no right to stay in your mouth. That is what Scripture shows in Acts 18 and Acts 20, plainly, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a sentence off a person and does not give it back.

I still love the man who taught me to pray, and he and I do not see this the same way, and that is where we are. He would tell you the work is a distraction. I read the book for myself and found a tent shop in it.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Shame, you are not going to sit on my hands one more day. Scripture names a tentmaker's trade with no apology in the sentence, so get off me in the name of Jesus, and let my work be called what God calls it.
  2. Voice that made me add an excuse, you have no business in my mouth. The word says these hands ministered to my necessities and to them that were with me, and by the Holy Spirit my hands are doing that same honest work.
  3. Lord, You gave me the power to get and You have never once looked down on the job that is paying for my life. Your word kept a needle in an apostle's hand on purpose, so I take this shift as something You are in and I go to it with my head up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
