Jesus I Know, and Paul I Know, but Who Are Ye

There is an account in Acts that is almost funny until you think about who it is describing.

Seven brothers, sons of a chief priest, saw Paul doing something remarkable. People were being set free, and the name of Jesus was being used, and these men watched it work and decided to use the same words.

So they went to a man and said: we adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches.

That is a correct sentence. The name is right. The formula is right. They had been paying attention and they had copied it accurately.

And the response they got is one of the strangest lines in the New Testament.

Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are ye?

Not what are you saying. Who are you. The question was not about their words at all. It was about whether anybody on the other side of the invisible world had any idea who they were.

And then it went very badly for them.

They copied the words exactly

Read what they said, because their accuracy is the point.

Then certain of the vagabond Jews, exorcists, took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, We adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. (Acts 19:13, King James Version)

By Jesus whom Paul preacheth.

They got the name right. They even got the reference right. Their theology in that sentence is not wrong, and if you graded it as a statement it would pass.

What it did not have was any person behind it. They were quoting a relationship they did not have, and the words carried exactly as much weight as the relationship they were borrowed from, which was none.

You are not failing because you got the words wrong, and the power has never once been in the syllables. That is not me discounting Scripture. Acts 19:15 has the question land on who rather than on what, and it is the Holy Spirit who moves a person from reciting to actually knowing Him.

Where formulas come from

I want to say something in defense of these men, because I have been where they were.

They were not scoffers. They saw something real, they wanted it, and they did what any reasonable person does when they see something work: they copied the method.

That is how almost every formula in church life starts. Somebody sees a thing that God genuinely did through a person, and they try to isolate the mechanism, and what gets passed down two generations later is a phrase and a posture with the relationship quietly missing from the middle.

Nobody meant to do that. The people who handed it to me did not know it was hollow, because for them it had not been. They had the relationship and the words at the same time, and they passed on the part they could put into a sentence.

You have not been deceived by anybody, and a hollow formula has never once meant that the people who taught it were frauds. Acts 19 shows men imitating something real, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts the missing thing back rather than taking the words away.

Words are not spells

This is the line I keep coming back to and it governs everything I write.

A declaration is not an incantation. When I speak the word of God over a situation, the authority in it is not coming from getting the wording right. It is delegated, the way an ambassador's authority is delegated, and an ambassador has power exactly as far as they are actually representing a king who actually sent them.

The seven had the vocabulary of an embassy and no commission.

That is why the anchor matters in everything on this site. Every declaration has to be tied to two things: what God actually said, and the Spirit who makes it live. Without those, a declaration drifts into technique, and technique is what those brothers were doing in that room.

You are able to speak with real authority, and it has never once come from precision of phrasing. Acts 3:6 has Peter say what he has and give it, which is a man giving out of possession rather than reciting, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the current behind any word a person speaks.

What they were missing was not effort

Here is the part I want somebody to hear, because it is easy to read this account and try harder.

Those men did not need more sincerity. They probably had plenty. They did not need better technique, and they certainly did not need a stronger formula.

They needed to be known.

And that is not a thing anybody achieves by effort. It is a thing that happens over time in an ordinary relationship: talking, listening, obeying small things, being honest about the parts that are not working. There is no shortcut to being known and there has never been one.

Which means the answer to a hollow formula is not a better formula. It is a person going and actually spending time with God, in their own words, badly at first, the way everybody starts.

You are known by Him already, and no amount of getting the words right has ever once added to that. Galatians 4:9 says after ye have known God, or rather are known of God, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a felt reality rather than a doctrine.
