He Was Mighty in the Scriptures and He Still Got Corrected

This message is for the reader who hears correction as proof that they were wrong to have started at all

There was a man in the early church who was, by every description in the text, extremely good.

Eloquent. Mighty in the Scriptures. Instructed in the way of the Lord. Fervent in spirit. He spoke and taught diligently, and Luke uses four separate compliments in two verses, which is more praise than most people in that book get in a lifetime.

And there was something he did not know.

He was preaching accurately as far as he had been taught, and his teaching had stopped short of something important, and he did not know that it had. That is the hardest kind of gap to find. He was not being careless. He was faithfully teaching everything he had, and everything he had was incomplete.

So a husband and wife who heard him preach did something that I think about constantly.

They took him aside and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly.

Took him aside. Not corrected him from the floor. Not raised it in front of the room. Took him aside, privately, and filled in what was missing.

And then he went on preaching, harder than before, and the churches sent letters ahead of him to receive him.

The praise and the gap are in the same paragraph

Read the whole description, because everything is in it at once.

And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue: whom when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him unto them, and expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly. (Acts 18:26, King James Version)

He began to speak boldly. And then he got taught.

Luke does not treat those as contradictory and he does not present the correction as a takedown. Being mighty in the Scriptures and having something significant missing are, in that account, entirely compatible states, and Scripture does not seem to find that embarrassing at all.

That is the thing to catch. In our heads, correction cancels the compliments. In that chapter, both stay on the page.

You are able to be genuinely good at something and still be missing a piece, and God has never once treated those as contradictions. That is not me flattering anybody. Acts 18:24-26 stacks four compliments and one correction in three verses, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person hold both without the second erasing the first.

What correction feels like to a person who started scared

Here is why this matters so much, and it is about who was in the room before the correction ever came.

Some people start things confidently. Correction lands on them as information and they adjust and keep moving.

Other people started scared. They half expected to be found out from the beginning, and they have a sentence ready in the back of their mind that says they never should have opened their mouth. When correction arrives, it does not land as information. It lands as the confirmation they were waiting for.

Same correction. Two completely different events, depending on what the person was already carrying.

And I know which one I am. When I was starting, the smallest note from somebody I respected could take a week off me, and it was never about the note.

You are not being found out, and a correction has never once been a verdict on whether you belong in the room. Acts 18 has a corrected man immediately go on to help many which had believed through grace, and the Spirit of God is the one who separates a note about the work from a judgment on the person.

Two things they did right

I want to name what Aquila and Priscilla actually did, because if anybody reading this ever corrects somebody, this is the model.

They took him aside. The correction was private. They did not establish anything about themselves in front of a room at his expense, and there is no indication anybody else knew it happened.

And they expounded rather than rebuked. The text does not say they told him he was wrong. It says they explained the way of God more perfectly to him. They gave him more, and the more replaced the less without anybody having to be humiliated.

That is not softness. He walked out of that conversation with something he did not have, which is the entire point of correction, and none of it cost him his standing.

You are worth correcting well, and God has never once needed a person humiliated in order to teach them. Acts 18:26 says they took him unto them and expounded, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings people into a person's life who can hand them something rather than take something off them.

He did not stop

And here is the sentence that finishes it, and it is the whole reason I chose this passage.

Right after that conversation, he wanted to go to another region, and the brothers wrote letters ahead of him telling that church to receive him, and when he got there he helped them greatly, and he mightily convinced people in public.

He got more public, not less. The correction did not shrink him.

That is not automatic. Plenty of people go quiet after a correction and never start again, and the world is full of teachers and builders and singers who stopped over one conversation that the other person has forgotten.

You are able to go back at it, and one correction has never once been the end of anybody's usefulness. Acts 18:27-28 has Apollos more effective after the correction than before it, and the Spirit of God is the one who gets a person back on their feet after a hard note.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is being spoken over somebody today.

You are still in the room, and a note about your work has never once removed you from it. I am not pretending correction is painless. Acts 18 has a gifted man taken aside and taught, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my reassurance who gets the difference between a note and a verdict all the way into a person who has been quiet since.

Deuteronomy 8:18 says God gives the power to get. Every honest thing anybody gets is got in exactly this way: badly at first, corrected along the way, and better afterward. There is no other road and nobody in Scripture took a different one.

That means a correction is not evidence you were wrong to start. It is evidence you started, because nobody corrects a man who never opened his mouth.

You have something to go back to this week, and it has been waiting for you the whole time. Acts 18:27 has him carry on immediately with letters in his hand, and the Spirit of God is the one who puts a person back to work after a hard conversation.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Voice that turns correction into a verdict, you are not honest and you are leaving. Acts 18:26 says they expounded unto him the way of God more perfectly, so get out in the name of Jesus.
  2. Imagined audience in my head, you have no seat in this room. The word says he helped them greatly after he was taught, and by the Holy Spirit I am going back to the thing I stopped.
  3. Father, You gave me the power to get and the getting has correction in it every time. Your word has a mighty man taken aside and taught more perfectly, so I take what I was given and I go back to work.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
