WorkGenesis 2:15

He Put a Man in a Garden to Work It Before Anything Went Wrong

This message is for the reader who believes work is part of the curse and that rest is the only part God actually blesses

I want to take you back to a moment before anything had gone wrong anywhere.

No sin. No death. No shame. No sickness in any body, no argument in any house, no funeral anywhere on the earth. Nothing broken. The whole place is exactly the way God meant it to be, and He is walking in it in the cool of the day.

And in that place, in that perfect world, God gives a man a job.

Not a punishment. Not a consequence. Not a thing to do until the real life starts. He takes the man He just made and He puts him in a garden and He tells him to work it and to look after it. That is the assignment, and it is handed out in a world where absolutely nothing is wrong yet.

The serpent has not spoken. The fruit is on the tree. The ground is not cursed, the sweat is not on anybody's face, and thorns do not exist.

And there is already a job.

Read where the job shows up in the story

Here is the verse, and the only thing you have to notice is where it sits.

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15, King James Version)

Chapter two. The fall is chapter three.

That is the whole argument and I could almost stop there. Work is in the book a full chapter before anything goes wrong. Whatever happened later, work was not it. Work is not what broke. Work is part of what was called very good.

What did change is the difficulty. In chapter three God tells the man that the ground will fight him now, that it will bring up thorns, that bread will come with sweat on it. So the sweat is from the fall. The struggle is from the fall. The job is not.

You are not living under a sentence when you go to work, and the fatigue you feel is not proof that you are out of God's will. That is not a comfortable idea I am offering. It is where the text puts the assignment, one chapter early, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a fact like that and makes it feel like relief instead of information.

Dress it and keep it

Look at the two verbs, because they are not what most people expect.

Dress it. That word carries the sense of serving something, tending it, cultivating it. Keep it. That one means guard it, watch over it, protect it.

So the first job description in the Bible is: make this thing flourish, and do not let anything harm it.

That is a gardener and a watchman in the same person. And every honest job I can think of is still one of those two things. A person is either making something grow or keeping something from falling apart, and most of us are doing both at once by Thursday.

A nurse keeps. A teacher dresses. A mechanic keeps. A cook dresses. Somebody answering a phone all day for people who are upset is guarding a whole company's relationships and nobody has ever thanked them for it.

You have been doing kingdom work in ordinary clothes, and the two verbs God used still cover it. Look at what is written in Genesis 2, and let His Spirit apply it to the actual building you drive to, because that is what He gave it for.

The house I am still arguing with

In the house I grew up in, work sat in a different chapter.

Nobody said it in one sentence. It came out sideways, over years. Rest was spiritual. Waiting was spiritual. Wanting less was spiritual. And working hard at something was treated the way you would treat a man with a slight limp: nothing said out loud, but everybody knew.

I do not think anyone meant to teach me that. I think it came down through people who had watched work fail them. A city full of people who worked, and worked, and then the plants closed anyway, and after enough of that a person can start to believe the whole thing was a trap.

That is a wound, not a doctrine. And I understand it. I am not standing outside that house pointing at it. I am in it. I am the son in it, and I am still in the argument, and I will be in it a long time.

But when I finally read Genesis for myself, chapter two was sitting there where it has always been, and nobody had ever pointed at it.

You have been handed a story about your own hands, and the word tells a different one. Genesis puts the job before the fall on purpose, and the Spirit of God is the one who can loosen something a person absorbed at six years old and never once questioned.

The Sabbath argues the same way

Here is the part that surprised me most.

God rests on the seventh day, and He makes rest holy, and He builds it into the week for everybody after Him. And the way He describes it in the commandment is not "work is bad, here is your relief." It is: six days you labor and do all your work, and the seventh is a rest.

Six and one. The rest is the exception that gets protected because the working is assumed.

If work were the curse, the Sabbath would read like an escape hatch. It does not. It reads like a rhythm that both halves belong to, and He put Himself on both sides of it: He worked, and then He rested, and He called both of them good.

You are inside a rhythm God set up Himself, and neither half of it is a punishment. That is what Scripture lays down in Genesis 2 and again in the commandment, and the Holy Spirit is the one who lets a tired person hear it as an invitation and not another demand.

The breakthrough

So let me say it as plainly as I know how.

You are not cursed, and the alarm going off tomorrow morning is not a judgment on you. I am not decorating a hard life. Genesis 2:15 puts the job one chapter before the fall, the commandment builds six days of it into a holy week, and it is the Holy Spirit and not a positive attitude who takes that off a page and puts it under a person.

Now hear the other side, because I am not going to hand anybody a whip. The thorns are real. Some of you are tired in a way that a good verse does not fix, and some of you are working two jobs and still behind. That is the ground fighting back, and it is not your fault, and it is not a sign that God has withheld anything from you.

You have His hand on you in the middle of a hard week, and the difficulty has no right to name you. The written word says the ground was cursed and the man was not, and the Spirit of God is the one who keeps a person from confusing the two on a Monday.

He gives the power to get. He put that power in hands, in the second chapter of the book, before there was one thing wrong with the world.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Curse on my working day, you are not from Eden and you do not belong here. The word put the job in chapter two and the fall in chapter three, so get off my morning in the name of Jesus.
  2. Voice that calls me worldly for working, you have no standing in this house. Scripture says six days shalt thou labor, and by the Holy Spirit I am taking my week back as something God set up.
  3. Father, You gave me hands before anything in the world was broken. Your word says You put a man in a garden to dress it and to keep it, so I take this week as Yours and I work it with You beside me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
