WorkDeuteronomy 8:18

He Gave You Hands and Called It an Answer

This message is for the reader who has been told that waiting on God and doing nothing are the same thing

A woman inherited a field, and in the field there was a well, and the well was covered over with a stone.

She had been told her whole life that water was a gift. So she waited for it. She prayed honest prayers over dry ground, and she watched the sky, and when a neighbor asked why she did not roll the stone back she said she was not going to run ahead of God. Every season the field gave her less. Every season she prayed harder. And the water she was asking for was eleven feet beneath her, under a stone she could have moved in an afternoon.

She was not lazy and she was not faithless. She was reading her own field wrong. She had decided that anything arriving through her own arms could not be the answer, because an answer had to fall from somewhere.

Somebody reading this has a stone in their field.

The verse everybody quotes and nobody finishes

Read it slowly, because almost everybody has heard it read fast:

But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day. (Deuteronomy 8:18, King James Version)

He gives power to get. He does not say He gives wealth.

The context is not decoration. Moses is speaking to a people at the end of forty years in a wilderness where God fed them without their labor. Manna came down. Nobody planted it, nobody harvested it, nobody earned it. Now they are about to cross into a land of vineyards they did not plant and wells they did not dig, and Moses tells them exactly what will go wrong in their thinking. Verse seventeen is the warning:

And thou say in thine heart, My power and the might of mine hand hath gotten me this wealth. (Deuteronomy 8:17)

So the sentence is answering a specific error, and it is not the error most people bring to it. Verse eighteen is not correcting a person who works too hard. It is correcting a person who works and then forgets whose strength it was. God does not remove the hand. He names its source.

The strength you have been calling ordinary is the thing God gave, and He gave it on purpose. That is not a motivational reading. It is what the verb says, and it is His Spirit, not your effort, that turns a sentence you have heard a hundred times into something that finally lands.

The first man Scripture says God filled with His Spirit

Here is a fact worth sitting with. The first person in the Bible described as filled with the Spirit of God was not a prophet, a priest or a king. He was a craftsman.

And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, And in cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of timber, to work in all manner of workmanship. (Exodus 31:3-5)

You are filled for the work of your own hands, and that has never once been a lesser anointing than anybody else's. Exodus 31:3 says God filled a craftsman with the Spirit of God for cutting and carving, and it is the Holy Spirit who does that same filling in an ordinary person doing ordinary work.

His name was Bezalel. God fills a man with His own Spirit so that he can cut stone properly, and set it properly, and carve wood well. Scripture does not treat that as a lesser anointing than preaching. It treats it as the same Spirit, given for a different work, and it says so of him before it says it of anyone else.

Notice what God did not do. He did not make the tabernacle appear. He had the pattern, He had the materials, and He had every option available to Him. What He chose was to put skill inside a man and let the man build it.

God's usual way of providing is not to bypass hands. It is to fill them. He said it of Bezalel, He said it of you in Deuteronomy 8:18, and the Spirit who did the filling then is the one making you restless about it now.

What Scripture says work is actually for

Work is older than the fall. Before there was a single thorn, before anything had gone wrong at all, there was a job.

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. (Genesis 2:15)

That is Eden. Perfect world, perfect fellowship, and a man with something to do. Work is not the curse; the curse made work hard. Which means labor is not a penalty being served until God gets around to somebody. It is part of what a person was made for.

And Scripture is plain about what it is for. Paul, writing to people who had been thieves, does not stop at telling them to stop stealing:

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. (Ephesians 4:28)

You have a purpose in your working that goes past your own household, and it has never once been only about surviving. Ephesians 4:28 says working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth, and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a person's labor pointed outward.

The goal is not survival, and it is not accumulation. The goal is capacity to give. That is the same architecture as Deuteronomy 8:18, where the power to get exists so that God may establish His covenant. Both verses run in the same direction: strength is given, so that something can move through you to somebody else.

Proverbs sends the sluggard to watch an insect, and the point is timing rather than effort. The ant has no overseer and still gathers in summer (Proverbs 6:6-8). Nobody tells her when. She reads the season she is in.

The breakthrough

Hear this plainly, because it is the thing most often left blurred.

You are not waiting for God to begin, and He has never once been the one holding this up. He began already: Deuteronomy 8:18 says He gives the power to get, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a person who has been waiting for a starting gun.

The evidence is in your own hands and in the skill that got discounted because it came easily, or because somebody once said it was not spiritual enough to count. What God gives is not the finished thing. It is the power to get it, and the getting has a first morning that looks like nothing.

This is not permission to presume. Presumption claims an outcome God never promised, and no honest teacher will tell you which field will yield or when. But spending a strength He plainly gave is not presumption. It is obedience, and it is the only response Deuteronomy 8:18 leaves open.

The stone in your field is not God's answer withheld. It is God's answer covered, and the arms He gave you are enough to move it. Christ is in you, and the Spirit who filled a craftsman for carving is the Spirit who lives in you, and He is not waiting for anybody to become somebody else first.

You have arms that were issued on purpose, and no stone in that field has ever once been heavier than what He put in them. Exodus 31:3 has God filling a working man with His own Spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who supplies the strength for the first hour rather than the applause after the last.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over your own hands is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. God said He gives power to get, so speak to what has been holding that power in a drawer: you have standing to address it because He is the one who put the strength there. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Deuteronomy 8:18 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not your volume, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Stone over the well in my own field, you are not God's will for me and you are moving. The Word of God says it is He that giveth thee power to get, and He gave that power to me before anything in my circumstances changed.
  2. Fear that I was never empowered, you are finished in the name of Jesus. The word says in Exodus 31:3 that God filled a craftsman with His own Spirit for the work of his hands, and that same Spirit lives in me for the work of mine.
  3. Father, Your word in Deuteronomy 8:18 says You give power to get, and I believe You. I receive the hands You gave me and I am spending them today, because You settled this before I ever asked.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
