DependencyMatthew 6:24

Whatever Feeds You Will Eventually Tell You What to Think

This message is for the reader who has never traced where their loyalty actually runs

A village on a dry plain was given a cistern by a man from the city.

It was a good cistern. It held through two summers when nothing else did, and the people who had watched their children go thirsty were not sentimental about where the water came from. They were grateful, and they said so.

In the third year the man from the city asked the village to settle a dispute in his favor. It was a small thing and the facts were not on his side, and every elder knew it. They talked it over for one evening. Then they ruled the way he wanted.

Nobody was bribed. Nobody was threatened. Not one person in that room could have told you the moment their judgment moved, because it had not moved in that room. It had moved three years earlier, on the day the water started arriving, and none of them had thought to write it down as a cost.

The day Israel asked for a manager

There is a chapter where a whole nation changes fathers and nobody in it thinks that is what they are doing.

Israel comes to Samuel and asks for a king. Their reasoning is practical and it is not obviously wicked: Samuel is old, his sons are corrupt, and every nation around them has one. They want somebody to organize them and fight for them. And God's answer to Samuel is startling:

And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them. (1 Samuel 8:7, King James Version)

They had not said a word against God. They had asked for an administrator. And God reads the request as a transfer of allegiance, because that is what it was.

Then Samuel does something a modern reader can skip past. He tells them the price, in detail. The king will take their sons for his chariots. He will take their daughters for cooks and bakers. He will take the best of their fields and vineyards and give them to his servants. He will take a tenth of their seed and their sheep.

And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day. (1 Samuel 8:18)

Every dependency creates a loyalty, and the loyalty is charged for later. That is not cynicism about people. It is the plain arithmetic of the chapter, and the Spirit is the one who applies it to your own arrangements rather than to somebody else's.

You are being told the price in advance, and He has never once let anybody walk into an arrangement blind. 1 Samuel 8:18 lists what a king takes before a single one of them had one, and the Holy Spirit does that same early warning work inside a person.

The proverb that says it in nine words

Scripture does not leave this to narrative alone. It states it flatly:

The rich ruleth over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender. (Proverbs 22:7)

Servant. Not debtor, not customer. The relationship changes what a person is, not merely what they owe.

And Jesus takes it further than money:

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Matthew 6:24)

You have one master in practice whatever you have on paper, and nobody has ever once managed two. Matthew 6:24 says ye cannot serve God and mammon, and the Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person which one is actually holding them.

Notice He does not say you should not. He says you cannot. It is not a warning about divided attention. It is a statement about how a human being is built: whatever holds your provision holds a claim on your allegiance, and you will discover which one you actually serve on the day the two of them want different things.

Egypt was not just a place

Watch what Israel does the moment the desert gets hard.

And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? (Exodus 14:11)

And later, with manna arriving every morning, they remember Egypt as a menu:

We remember the fish, which we did eat in Egypt freely; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlick. (Numbers 11:5)

Freely. They are describing slavery as a place where food was free.

That is what dependency does to memory. It does not only bend the will, it edits the past, until the arrangement that owned you is remembered as the one that fed you and the wilderness where God feeds you daily is remembered as the deprivation.

Nothing that owns you will ever tell you it owns you. It will tell you it is taking care of you.

You are able to see the whole receipt on a place that fed you, and remembering the good of it has never once meant you were wrong to leave. Numbers 11:5 keeps the fish and the melons on the record and Exodus 1 keeps the bricks, and the Holy Spirit is the one who holds both in front of a person at the same time.

The breakthrough

So trace it. Honestly, on paper, with nobody watching.

What actually provides for you? Not who signs the check, though start there. What do you protect? Whose displeasure would change how you speak? Where do you already know you would fold?

You are not being asked to become independent. Nobody in Scripture is independent. The question is never whether a person will depend, it is on whom, and the whole of Scripture is one long invitation to depend on the only One who does not use it against anybody, and it is the Holy Spirit who moves a person's leaning without leaving them standing on nothing.

You have a Provider who asks nothing of you that is not already for your good, and no other arrangement has ever once been able to say that. Luke 12:32 has Him give the kingdom as a pleasure rather than a transaction, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that difference felt rather than merely agreed with.

That is the difference and it is enormous. Every other provider extracts loyalty as a fee. God gives provision as a Father, and He is the only one who feeds you and then asks nothing of you that is not already for your good. Samuel's king takes. Jesus gives, and then says fear not, little flock; for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom (Luke 12:32).

You have changed fathers, and what provides for you does not own you any more. That is not a resolution you are making. It is a fact about where you now stand, and the Spirit who bore witness that you are a child of God is the one who makes it real to you rather than merely true.

Declare this over yourself

Say it out loud. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, so the authority to speak over what you depend on is genuinely yours, delegated and never invented. Scripture says you cannot serve two masters, so speak to the loyalty you have never traced: you have standing to address it because your Father has already bought you out of it. An ambassador carries the King's word and never his own policy, so say what God has said and leave the outcome to Him. Every line below is Matthew 6:24 and Luke 12:32 handed back in your own voice, and it is His Spirit, not your volume, that makes saying it a receiving.

  1. Loyalty I never traced and never agreed to, you are named now and you are not my master. The Word of God says no man can serve two masters, and I serve the One who feeds me without ever charging me my allegiance for it.
  2. Fear of losing what provides for me, you are finished in the name of Jesus. The word says in Luke 12:32 that it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom, so I am my Father's and He is glad to be mine.
  3. Father, You are the One I depend on, and You are the only one who has never used it against me. Your word says no man can serve two masters, so I receive that today and I hand back the claim anything else had on me.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
